Took this snapshot with my phone camera from a distance today before it swam off to a nearby nest. I thought this was an otter until I looked up a picture of an otter. This guy had a long skinny tail like a possum, and was more rotund than an otter. It didn't seem scared of me at all. I knew Nutria were in South Carolina, but I've never seen one on the Congaree. I'd hate for these pests to make it down to the swamp and start tearing up the plants down there. What's the law on killing these bad boys? Also, what would be the safest, legal way to do so in public? I'd love to break out my sling shot.

Apparently they are a newer problem.. according to a DNR article posted in 2007(I would link it but I'm on my phone) the guy they interviewed said they were a concern but not yet prevalent in SC
Sounds like another invasive species problem Maybe you should call turtleman ![]() |

I'd love to, but don't think that would go over well on the Riverwalk. Crossbow tied to a retrieval rope maybe.

hmm, if they get bad enough I wonder if the state would consider a bounty on them, I would love to see a bounty on coyotes/feral hogs/nutria...I would have a side job

I live on a lake in Florence and I see 1 almost every afternoon come swimming by my dock at sundown. There are houses across the lake so I don't want to risk shooting with a shotgun or rifle, but I have been thinking how take him out. I am open to ideas.

This is how they deal with them in Louisiana. $5 per animal.

either trap them or shoot them with subsonic .22 ammo (it is much quieter and safer for those houses in the distance)

Here's what you do, get a .22 and a long potato put the .22 barrell through the potato leaving about 5 inchs of potato hanging from the barrell. Get a towel and tape around the potato and you have a suppressor :) sounds like a balloon leaking air!
