Grown men feeling scorned. Sure, maybe the athletics department should do a better job honoring former athletes but crying in public is pathetic. I also agree with the point that Tanner can address this issue but radio shows and twitter handles aren't how men handle disagreements.

Guys, it is very bad with former players and coaches. We have no ties to our history.
Go talk to Mike Saffran at Safran's Antiques in Columbia. Sit down with him for about 30 minutes and you'll realize how poorly the University has done some players, coaches, and basically spit on our history. Just some examples -USC had to ask Mike for photos of Frank McGuire for the Frank McGuire room b/c they didn't have any!! How does the University not have photos of Frank? -Kip and a couple other baseball players asked to speak and help out at a Gamecock Club function prior to Tanner taking over as AD. The guys Kip spoke to(Hyman's staff) didn't even know who he was -We have no athletic museum to honor past athletes. USC just isn't interested in building one, even though every SEC school has one. -We ran off many former players several years ago for wanting to workout at USC in the offseason. That didn't sit well with many of our NFL alumni -Bob Fulton's tapes, archives, videos, and personal collection was offered to the University, but no one was interested. It now sits at Saffran's There are numerous other examples. These are just a few. Corey is right. The problem is that we don't have many Gamecocks running things at South Carolina. Our last 2 ADs have been a Duke man and a UNC man. They don't care about the history of South Carolina, all they cared about was the future. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with the future, but ignoring the past can do damage too. |

many of these athletes get so much stuff for free and whenever they wanted while in high school and college and think they are entitled to keep getting stuff for free even after they leave. They do not always understand the rules and regulations that the schools and universities as well as their staffs have to follow when it comes to former athletes.

The problem is that we don't have a family at USC outside of baseball.
For decades USC hired and fired football coaches every few years. When a Carlen player cameback, then a Sparky Woods staff was going to ignore him. If a Woods player returned while Holtz was coach, he would've been ignored. That was just the way it was The McGuire guys were a family and that extended with Felton, but those guys have been left out over time. The problem is that there really isn't anyone working in USC athletics right now that remembers those guys. At places like Bama you have guys still in the administration that played or worked under Bear or at least are under his coaching tree. The same can be said with the Dooley guys at Georgia or the Broyles guys at Arkansas. This gives those schools more reasons to celebrate their past |

We definitely need to do more to honor the past athletes. That to me is a different discussion than Justice getting salt tablets. If the trainer thought it could be a violation and was not willing to risk it until he was sure, that's EXACTLY what he's supposed to do.
As far as a Hall of Fame, better Gamecock Alumni functions, etc., those are the things we really do need to build. |

meh, I bet there's some regulation about athletes getting materials/services after they graduate. Did Cunningham already graduate though?
Unless the funding comes from the athletic department (or big booster) and it's available, we probably won't see a USC Athletic Hall of Fame/Museum. The state SC budget is locked down with the current administration. Who knows, making sure all the financials are in order may be one of Ray's objectives. He was hired really based on leadership and his teams' performances. Maybe he's trying to show that he can be tough on the financials as previous administrations were.

Talk to some of them. I am a media guide junkie so I recognize every player since the 80's. If I see one on Gameday we always invite them to stop by the tailgate. I have heard many times they wish the University did more for them. I have a good friend that was on the CarQuest team. That team was very upset about the lack of recognition for the school's first bowl win at the 10th anniversary. I think a big part of the problem is the fact that since 1975 we have had 7 football coaches. We have a similar problem with the basketball team where we have also had a lot of coaches. You don't see this problem with the baseball team where our 4th coach in 40 years is beginning his career as a head coach which will probably be a long one. And by the way, unless it is a rules violation or they felt it wasn't the right thing for him, Justice earned some salt pills.

One thing that may kill that team getting any recognition is the hate USC fans have for Brad Scott. Typically, you bring back a former head coach for a celebration like that. Things we could do better -Build a Hall of Fame. As mentioned above the best collection of Gamecock items in the State is at an Antique Shop in Columbia, that isn't affiliated with USC. That's a joke and should change. A museum could charge $5.00 for fans to enter and really showcase our past. I know I'm basically giving free advertisement to Saffran's, but if you haven't been there you must. It's amazing the amount of Gamecock stuff in that place -Honor past teams at halftime. We don't do this near enough -Honor a past team or game on the giant video board during timeouts. The baseball alumni stick together b/c their coach is still here. We must work harder for the basketball and football alumni to come together since their coach was likely fired many years ago. |

We took those things 40 yrs ago because we didn't know any better...can't believe they're still around. They were used to replenish potassium...and yea, Gator or 'nanas are much better ways to do this without potentially causing other problems. Ingesting all that salt could cause some heart/blood pressure issues....

Tell me what past we had to really connect too? Only real glimmer was George Rodgers Heisman and a small smattering of players that went on to lengthy pro careers. Simple question....what does the University owe these players for the rest of their lives, that they don't owe students who paid for their education?
