i live in the Upstate and i'm looking for a place to camp that requires a bit of a trek to get to the site (at least 1 mile) and thus pretty secluded.
also near a river would be nice, but it's hard to find secluded spots around bodies of water. any help would be appreciated. thanks, friends.

I like Jones Gap in Caesar's Head
They have quite a few campsites- you can 'reserve' one that is 1+ miles in. I know there's a waterfall along the trail, so there's definitely water around. |

Mt. Pisgah National Forest in western NC is a great place with campsites, both formal and informal.

worth the drive, but Shining Rock Wilderness is the shit! 1.5 hrs from Greenville, many choices of spots for to put up a tent once you get there:
Black Balsam - scenic but a bit too open if youre looking for secluded Sam Knob - about a 2 mile hike, very scenic and secluded Shining Rock - about 10 miles round trip Cold Mtn. - 15ish round trip depending on where you hike from all are accessible from the 420 (that's right ;D) mile marker off the Blue Ridge Pkwy - I absolutely LOVE that area and have camped many times around there, feel free to PM me if you want anymore details, I envy you, have been for a camp in several years

Linville Gorge in Pisgah, no doubt.
The hike down into the gorge is fairly challenging and plenty of primitive camping along the river.

There are also some great trails along the Chattooga river near Oconee State Park.
