I was taught a valuable lesson from my father. Only go out to restaurant if you can afford to tip well. If you have very good service and can't afford to give 20%+ you shouldn't be going out in the first place because your money is better spent elsewhere in life.

I totally agree. It always pisses me off when a place automatically takes a gratuity out of my bill. Doesn't matter if the service was shit or not, they are giving MY MONEY away without my consent. I came to restaraunt to pay for food that I consume. If service is really good, I tip really good. If service is shit, and sometimes it is, then they don't get shit for a tip. But to add a tip in automatically is total crap, period!! Maybe the restaraunt should pay their effing employees better???

That is another thing I don't understand. Why in no other industry is the general population expected to compensate for what the company you buy from will not? I mean, I can understand tipping your barber/stylist because they possess a unique skill. I can understand tipping a LOT of other service positions OTHER than wait staff with a legitimate reason...mechanics, tax professionals, plumbers, etc.

The place I worked in the service industry (well, 1 of the 2) we were paid minimum wage PLUS tips. Why is that a hard concept to grasp?

If Applebee's for example did that, I would expect they would charge 30-40% more for food and drink. I would rather tip 18-25%,

Generally they only add gratuity to checks of 8 or more. Those tables aren't exactly easy to take care of especially if you get one ore two demanding people. Not to mention the time it takes from your other tables, that may decide to stiff you because the large table was taking you away so much.

Also, AC, a majority of those places that add gratuity add it for large parties, and they put something on the menu saying that it is added automatically. So, by eating there with a large party, you are consenting to it, btw.

I do enjoy the blaming of "big restaurant" for JACKIN UP THE PRICES ALL THE TIME AND SITTING BACK, COUNTING THEIR PROFITS WHILE WE SUBSIDIZE THEIR EMPLOYEES. That's an incredibly idiotic argument, and it reeks of never having seen a restaurant balance sheet or knowing their margins. Somebody mentioned it above, if they have to pay minimum wage (what's that, like 7.50 now?) instead of ($2), they are going to increase their prices way more than the 18% you cheapasses are refusing to pay.

They are getting payed plenty more without that as the prices of meals and such have gone up. I have had 20% added to my bill at breakfast for a table of one in Miami. Of course our corporate overlords like having us pay their employees wages.

I dont mind tipping a waitress. I usually tip 20% i know it goes to not just them however i am sick of places like sub shops and coffee house with tip jars. You are getting paid to do your job and you are serving me one time totally different from a waitress who takes my order, brings me my food and gets me drinks two or three times.

I mean, if it bothers you that much, don't put money in it. I used to work at Moes (yep, go ahead laugh it up) and we had a tip jar. They got added up and split every two weeks, I believe it was the opposite of our pay weeks so we had a little income every week. People would usually just throw their coins in it. It was never more than 20 bucks. It was mostly used to keep the register girls in check and on their game. I messed up once and my drawer was off by like 10 dollars so they docked my tips for that week to even it out.

My friend still works there as a shift leader and said they just did away with the tip jar and gave everyone a 25 cent raise

You are absolutely obligated to pay it, as they warn you on the menu beforehand that any party of a certain number or higher will have gratuity automatically added in. If it really bothers you that bad split your party of 8 into two tables of 4.
