The relationship between Thompson's faith and his football playing is a very real one. He has actually said that the only thing that makes football worth all the work is that it gives him a larger platform on which to share his faith. In other words, he's willing to do all the work involved in becoming a better player with all that entails because people will listen to him because of it. He has also said that he loves football and loves to play, but his faith is his strongest motivation.

If you're a Gamecock fan, that's good news. It's not all about personal fame, glory, or money with him. God is a stronger and better motivator than any of those things. People don't usually self-destruct because they believe in God. They regularly self-destruct when their sole aim is fame, self-promotion, or money. Just look at Hollywood for the proof of that.

I think that the two are unrelated. plenty of shitty football players are devout christians. and plenty of amazing football players arent. And in the end I would prefer to avoid the team I support being lead by a person who's sole ambition is to tell me about god.

I agree that plenty of Christians aren't good at what they do. I never said that Christianity is a motivator for everyone. I taught high school, and I saw many unmotivated, lazy Christian young people. Same with adults.

However, in Thompson's case, his Christianity is a motivator, and it makes him work hard.

I'm a Christian, too, but I don't think I'm nearly as motivated as he is. If I were, I'd be a concert pianist by now.

Most probably, the reason for your discomfort is that listening reminds you of your own mortality. You would prefer not to think about that issue. You just want to continue doing what you want to do without considering the consequences of the moral choices you make.
