Postal Service to Stop Saturday Delivery

But they'll still deliver packages on Saturday. I don't see this saving much money but I've thought it was always stupid to delivery mail on the weekends.

The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays but continue to deliver packages six days a week under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion annually, the financially struggling agency says.

The best way they can save money is to close down completely. Private companies (ex: Fed-Ex, UPS) can do the same thing for much cheaper....and actually make money doing it.

You really think companies like UPS and FedEx will let customers mail a letter to anywhere in the United States for 46 cents?

I'd like to see the post office deliver 2 days a week. In some areas, they could
stop home delivery altogether and set up a mini post office where people would have a box. If a person wanted 5 or 6 day a week service, they would have a
box at a full service post office and they would be charged a large monthly fee
for the service.

Before Christmas I was home for a week I rec'd 4 pkgs 1 UPS 1 FEDX 2 postal service. Both UPS and FEDX placed the packages at my door, the mail person walked up my drive to the walkway of my front porch and tossed them to the door.

First they lost the overnight letters and small pkgs, then they lost most all parcel packages, next its the mail?

You'll pay 3 times as much to send your letter across the country.

They should just deliver mail every other day. Split the routes into 2 and do one route one day and the other rout the other day. They could eliminate 1/2 the letter carriers right there. And half the vehicles, half the fuel, etc.

I don't need junk mail everyday anyhow. And the bills can wait a day.

Why not use a stamp as advertising space? It could say "best buy" or "ford" or something like that. Better to make .01 cent for every 10 stamps than none at all.

The post office actually looked at that a while back and said it wouldn't generate any revenue. They're not exactly geniuses at the post office. This would be easy money and is a great idea.

I don't see how it is really a great idea because the point of advertising is to gain exposure...wouldn't the only person seeing the logo be the person sending the letter, the mailman, and the recipient?

Fact is, the "old" generation will be gone and we won't have to even question whether the Postal Service is a necessity anymore.

E-mail and online personal business hasn't even reached NEARLY the potential it can and will. It will take care a LOT of the unnecessary mail passing around these days (bills, letters, notices, statements, etc).

I mean, my grandma is 75 and got a laptop recently with internet. Now, remember...information passes all around you everyday through newspapers, commercials, media, radio, etc...but STILL, my Grandma was BLOWN AWAY that I could send a message to someone instantly that was hundreds of miles away.

You should have seen the amazement on her face when I showed her Skype. It was like seeing a kid at Christmas and she was speechless.

I mean...how many of you still use the MAIL to pay any bills? (that would be a good poll on here, actually)

Has nothing to do with age. I know many people your age who just aren't wired. As for me, I haven't used snail mail to pay bills when I could use e-mail in years. There are still a few places that don't accept online payments though. The biggest consumer of standard mail isn't the residential customer however. It is business. At this point in time doing away with mail service would wreck the economy. While that is changing I think that it has another decade or two to go.

UPS shipping services are great. I weigh my package, print out my postage, and let them know to pick it up. The will come to my door and get my stuff and off it goes. I get a discount for doing that as well.
