Early 5 star for 2014

Peppers starred on both sides of the ball last season, but his highest upside is likely at cornerback. He was 247Sports Defensive Player of the Year for the Class of 2014.

Kid is a stud though and he's been through a lot in his life.

The father would watch his young son intently as the boy ran wind sprints and perfected his backpedaling under the fading afternoon sky at Soverel Park in East Orange.
He would lift his son on to the pull-up bar and watch him strain through repetitions. He showed him how to plant his foot in the grass and propel his body forward through a tangle of invisible tacklers as he cradled a football.
One day when Jabrill Peppers was 7 years old and already showing signs of extraordinary athletic potential, he asked his mother for her cell phone to call his father. He wanted to work out with his dad, same as always.
His question was met with pained eyes. His mother told him to sit down. He plopped on the comforter in her bedroom and she clicked off the television. She hesitated.
Daddy was arrested, she said. He is in jail.
Jabrill began to cry. His father took him for rice and beans and curry chicken at Gealie Family Eatery on Central Avenue. He bought shaded visors for his entire Pop Warner football team so they would be the coolest-looking kids in the league. He stood on the sideline at Jabrill’s games, video camera in hand, astonished by the way his little boy juked and darted for touchdowns.
Now his father was suddenly lifted from his life.
Jabrill’s father, Terry Peppers, is in a medium-security federal prison tucked deep in the rolling mountains of central Pennsylvania. He lives in a small jail cell. Taped to the wall is a picture recently clipped from Sports Illustrated. The picture is of Jabrill, glaring, in his football uniform.
Jabrill, now 17, has not seen his father in 10 years. He does not know where the prison is, or even what crime he committed. Their only contact is over the phone, his father’s voice distant.

Recruiting Update: The five-star Peppers says that Ohio State and Stanford are the two programs recruiting him the hardest and that he plans to visit both in the spring. Besides Rutgers, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Peppers has yet to see any other campuses, focusing on his junior season at his new school. He played his first two seasons at nearby Don Bosco Prep. Peppers added that he’d like to take visits to Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC. He plans to take his time with the recruiting process and doesn’t expect to have a decision made prior to his senior season.

Prospect Note: Ranked as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in his class, Peppers has been playing safety this fall and makes the checks and calls presnap. The straight-A student is also an aspiring musician, business owner and doctor. “He’s better than advertised,” head coach Chris Partridge said. In eight games, Peppers has 891 yards rushing on just 93 carries and 12 touchdowns. He’s added another 323 yards receiving and five more scores. On defense he has 48 tackles, a sack and two interceptions.

The Paramus (N.J.) Catholic standout has dominated New Jersey High School football upon his arrival three years ago and this past fall was no different. In leading his team to a state championship, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Peppers moved from cornerback to safety and posted 80 tackles and four interceptions. On offense he added 1,552 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns on just 172 carries. Peppers also caught five touchdown passes. Stanford and Ohio State are the early leaders for Peppers, with Michigan and Notre Dame rounding out the top four. He is ranked by the 247Composite as the country’s top athlete and No. 7 prospect overall.

Checking in at No. 2 and pressing Hand the most is Paramus (N.J.) Paramus Catholic cornerback Jabrill Peppers. Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic analyst Adam Friedman chimes in on Peppers' run at No. 1.

"The combination of speed, physicality, understanding of the game and playmaking ability that Peppers brings from the secondary is unmatched in the 2014 class," Friedman said. "Not only is Peppers a shutdown corner but he is a true difference-maker on the offensive side of the ball, playing quarterback, running back and wide receiver and he is always a threat to take it to the house.

"What makes Hand the top player in the country right now is his unique combination of size, speed and athleticism. If Hand doesn't continue to push and work hard, Peppers could have a solid case for the No. 1 spot."

"Jabrill Peppers reminds me a little bit of Vernon Hargeaves III in build and ball skills, but Peppers is more explosive as an offensive player," Farrell said. "On defense, however, both are exceptional. Adoree' Jackson reminds me a bit of Tre'Davious White."

The headliner, at least for now, is Peppers. The top-rated 2014 corner is one of the biggest threats to steal the No. 1 overall ranking from defensive end Da'Shawn Hand. And make no mistake, that's a goal of his. Peppers made the world aware of that when he tweeted his intentions after seeing the No. 2 next to his name.

"It's a honor to be ranked the #2 player in the Nation! But in my eyes, if your not first your last. Extra Motivation!!" he wrote.

And so begins the chase.

"Peppers' instincts, athleticism, speed and playmaking ability are very similar to former Florida All-American cornerback Joe Haden," Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic recruiting analyst Adam Friedman said. "He is the type of cornerback who can lock down one side of the field and is not afraid to come up hard to stop the run. Peppers is almost at that same level as Kendall Fuller and Vernon Hargreaves and would push for the top spot in the 2013 cornerback class. The three of them have a lot of the same qualities."

Didn't we kinda recruit him when we recruited Damiere? I thought I remember people talking about him as a sophomore and that we kinda talked to him a bit.

Kid is a stud. No frosh play at Bosco and he was a starter. He was the best player on the team as a soph and then led Paramus Catholic to a title this year.

I will follow his career at whichever school he picks.

Peppers and Brown were four-star prospects entering their junior seasons, but added their fifth stars after superb seasons.

“To me, it’s a great honor to be named a 5-star player for Fox Sports” Peppers said. “It’s extremely important for me to be successful as a team first and foremost, and it can’t get any better than winning a championship and getting the highest rating a player can get.”

The 6-foot, 200-pound Peppers is set to visit Ohio State, Michigan and LSU next month. He recently said Stanford, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Alabama were standing out.

Whether deployed as an offensive or defensive skill position or as a returner, Peppers is a playmaker with explosive speed, smooth movements and excellent athleticism. He's very confident in his skills, and he should be. This young man is a game changer and could project at a few different positions at the next level but DB might be the spot. Has good overall size with height, length and a muscular frame that should continue to fill out and add strength. Has sudden movements but can also accelerate at a premium level with great top-end speed.

Originally evaluated in the athlete category, this lockdown corner shines on offense, defense and special teams, and his versatility is highly coveted. His blend of size, speed and ball skills as a skill player is exceptional, and his transition to the college level should be as smooth as his transitional skills in coverage. He is fast, fluid and physical at the corner position and should be able to lock down from day one and also set the edge on run support.
