Pitching won this series...no doubt.
Giving an unbiased breakdown of both teams' pitching. TEAM A Check me on the math (please) but in 9 In 3 H, 7 K 0 BB, 2 ERROR 9 IN, 3 H, 12 K, 2 BB, 0 ERROR 9 IN, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 10 K 0 ERROR TEAM B 8 IN 11 H, 8 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K 1 ERROR 9 IN, 5 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 5 K, 3 ERROR 9 IN, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 0 ERROR Just looking at that you get this. In 27 innings...TEAM A allowed 17 Hits, 3 Walks, 6 runs (5 earned) while striking out 25 with just 2 errors. That breaks down to about 2 runs on 6 hits, one walk .75 errors per game. TEAM B on the other hand, allowed 23 hits with 17 runs (7 earned) with 12 walks and 18 Ks while committing four errors. Breakdown: In 26 innings, close to 6 runs, 8 hits, 6 Ks, 4 walks on 1.25 errors per game. Clearly TEAM A's (CAROLINA) pitching deserves a big addaboy from this weekend. Just think...the teams "worst performance" of the weekend was a pitcher giving up 3 runs (Colby Holmes).

Nice breakdown of the weekend series. No doubt pitching won the series... they gave up ZERO runs total in two of the games and 6 in the other. So break that out and that is an average of giving up 2 runs a game... the offense (for a team as talented as ours) better be able to produce more than 2 runs/game or else there are problems.

ACC schools should thank us for giving them the key to shutting down Clemson. Everybody that can will be using lefties.

Good news, looks like our rotation is coming together nicely.

They had 6 guys that either switch or bat left in their normal, everyday lineup. Been that way for about two years. So naturally, just by law of averages, Colby was bound to have struggles against the lineup. I do find it odd Clemson has so many left-handed batters, but so few lefty pitchers (3).

IMO, Colby either starts strong and finishes strong, or he starts unsteadily and gets worse. Lately, I've rarely seen him start with nerves and settle down. Colby is awesome and earned the start against CU, but I wish we pulled him much sooner.
Wynkoop looked awesome in the game he pitched against Furman, so I hope he will give us another option as a weekend starter, if needed. |
