Its a surprisingly close competition at 3rd between big juan and big johnson.

My only concern is I've heard over the years that the Upton Brothers can be moody at times. We've had a really good locker room the past few years and I hope it doesn't get messed up

We knew there would be a competition when the trade was made. Don't really know where the surprise comes in, except for the fact that they are both earning playing time rather than showing why they don't deserve it.

After his last season, I expected juan to be fighting for a roster spot. I know he tore up the winter league, but I count that as equal to AA. So the surprise for me is that juan is holding his own in the competition that I expected to be a "competition" for lip service only.

I think that most would agree that Juan was very serviceable last year. He helped spell Chipper, showed off good power, and isn't terrible at third (better than Johnson, anyway). We feel like he has a chance to be a solid player, otherwise we wouldn't have kept him around.

Juan pros: Light Tower Power, slightly better defense, lefty bat against right handers, could be a power left handed bat off the bench.
Juan cons: Tough time against lefties, can't hit breaking balls, average and OBP is low.

Johnson pros: Good average. Really good power. More consistent bat. Can actually hit righties and lefties pretty well.

Johnson cons: Not very good on defense.

Juan's cons also include a lot of attitude issues. at least last year the staff was not overly thrilled with either juan's work ethic or his prescence in the clubhouse. I remember a time or two that he flipped his bat after a homerun. Once, Fredi even had to a speak with the opposing teams manager to assure him that things were being dealt with in house.

Yeah I remember him pimping a HR against his old team in Cincy.

But that all has been fixed apparently. He worked his butt off to lose a lot of weight and get in shape. They said he had an attitude adjustment right around the all star break last year. Came back a better player too. But he's still got a lot of developing to go.

I've heard this as well. To clarify, when I said surprised, I meant happily so. It seems you hear about players having attitude adjustments more often than you actually see it happen. Hopefully, he puts it all together this year.

I'm really happy to see both are playing well to win the job. Most of the time you see one get it by default because the other one was awful in the fight for the job.

exactly. if they keep playing like they are, it will be hard to make a bad choice with the lineup card.

Apparently the Braves are listening to offers for Jonny Venters. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

If anyone in that pen should be traded, it's EOF. He's got 1 year left and we aren't going to resign him. We could get so much for him. Guys like him have so much value on the market right now.

However, if its for a front line ace starting pitcher, we should listen. Or Chase Headley. Haha
