They changed the design of the practice facility.....it used to have red brick all the way to the roof, which I thought looked very nice and made the structure look less warehous-ey. Now it looks like they plan to use that 70s style tan/yellow brick for the outside. This was the original concept design:

I'm not a fan of the fencing around the plaza. It doesn't look that great.
I do love the way the indoor facility looks from the Garnet Way.

It was originally in the designs but was pulled out after construction cost went up.

Also appears that the new design has glass at the top/arch of the walls too, which I think looks good. I definitely don't think the new design looks "70's".

It's to keep out Clempson Tom so he doesn't embarrass himself doing a stupid video in WillyB.

You have to understand this is how building in the public sector works. I'd imagine these are in a phase II type of deal where either during or post construction we will add them. Never understood why it is that much easier to get things approved that way but it is. The worst part is that it will typically cost 10-20% more doing it this way but the people in charge don't look at the long term cost like that, they just look at the yearly bottom line. I wonder why nothing in the public sector can get done quickly or efficiently......

The athletic dept. is not public sector. The university is, but not the athletic dept. It seems to me that these buildings would come under the domain of the AD. this process also seems kind of "Hyman-esk"

Doesn't matter....it has to go through the university...even buildings privately funded have to have their budgets, plans, etc approved by everyone impacted (University, whoever owns the land, City of Columbia, etc). The athletic department (and AD) still has to report to someone above them. Also I would imagine there is some amount of money being borrowed on these which gives the BOT and the chain of command the final say...I know it sounds ridiculous...and it is...but that's how it works.

The fence around the stadium does great things:
1. It expands the footprint of the actual stadium experience. Instead of having no presence outside of the actual stadium, you can now have vendors and possibly build huts along the outside. It can be "part of the stadium" where as now, you just stand in line at a gate and then boom you are inside. 2. Lines will decrease in size if the above holds true. Everyone shoots into the gates at the same time currently. If the fence expands the atmosphere of the stadium, it is likely to be an area people get inside of and enjoy for a bit...looking at memorabilia, in the fan shop, eating a snack, etc. The mission isn't just "rush to our gate/seat".

I do love the yellow-ish brick and 60s/70s style architecture. Not only does it look well, but it blends in with the rest of campus (Strom Thurmond FWC, Quads, Horseshoe, etc).

Yeah, it's a throw back to the university's architecture from about 200 years ago (the Horseshoe). I don't like it, but that's the intent. I think that unfortunately there isn't much you can do to mask the warehouse-looking nature of a building this size.
