Pretty sure he wasn't a walk-on. He was drafted in the 20th round, although family ties had something to do with that. There's still a lot of potential there. 6'5" frame with a pretty good mentor in his dad.

he shouldve gone to a smaller school, period. a school like rider, vcu, richmond or george mason wouldve been better. i dont see him contributing here.

How in the world do you see him not contributing when he has never seen a live pitch at the college level? If he didnt have some sort of potential, he wouldnt have been recruited.

He wasn't a walk-on...we recruited him heavily to come to USC...

I heard Greg Maddux wanted to come back and play for us since he hasn't used his college eligibility. We told him he'd have to redshirt though.

He was a walkon . All this was discussed with him and his parents before he came to USC . They knew there was a possibility he might need a year to get stronger . If he was on scholarship he would have had to remain on the 35 man roster .

Your concept and mine of a "walk-on" is a bit different, but perhaps my idea of a walk-on for college baseball isn't very practical, considering scholarship limits. I consider a walk-on to be a kid who wasn't recruited by the program, who was going to college anyways but wanted to be a part of sports and walks on to the program and is a part of it despite not getting any financial assistance from that program.

We all know Ryan's family can foot a college tuition bill from anywhere, and wouldn't necessarily need a scholly or partial scholly. But I was under the impression that Ryan wasn't just some kid who showed up for tryouts, but was a prospect that we and other programs were recruiting, and we won out for his services. That's not my idea of what a "walk-on" is....

As I explained above...his dad is a childhood hero of mine but I would love nothing more than for his son to have a great career here then go on to be better than his dad

What part of, "looking like he isn't gonna be anything like his dad. It's a shame" is you not passing judgement? Just because you would love for something to happen doesn't mean you haven't already judged that something else is going to happen. I would love for Olivia Wilde to show up at my front door tonight and *use your imagination here* but it's not like I'm going to wait till I go to bed to judge whether or not I think it's going to happen.

Maybe your OP just sounded way more negative than you think you think it did, but when you say "it's a shame" you pretty much make it sound like you aren't really expecting him to ever contribute a whole lot, rather than, "It's a shame he'll probably make it to the majors but not join his dad in the HOF."

Most walkons are invited to come out nowadays at USC . Doubt if anyone "just shows up" to try out any more . LB Dantzler was not on scholarship his first year .

It doesnt matter what your opinions are, I am only stating facts. The facts are that Ryan was not a MLB prospects and was drafted by the Orioles for the same reason Houston drafted Roger Clemens son, although Colby was a much better prospect than Ryan. Ryan is years away from contributing at this moment and unless he transforms faster than expected, it will be a while before you see him in a USC jersey.
