In Clowney, we finally have that super elite player we've seen other teams have for years. Probable NFL draft first pick; media darling; amazing highlights; the talk of football fans everywhere; college football poster child...

I intend on soaking up Clowney's final year for everything it's worth.

Has anybody ever gotten more out of 1 play? Don't get me wrong, JC was having a nice year last year with some very good games ( 4 sacks @ Clemsux) but he was just another real good player up until that hit and then (like the UM dude's helmet) his career took off like a meteor and took on a whole new dimension. It's crazy just how much attention and fame that 1 play has attracted. And to think it's a GAMECOCK!!! How awesome is that and how awesome is JC!!!!

I disagree. It was such a clean hit with perfect form.
So it "shouldn't" hurt.
As someone said in a past thread

Yes, seriously. He was just another very good player with a world of potential. Before that hit, NOBODY was talking about Clowney laying out a year and than turning pro, he wasn't on EVERY sportstalk show in the country, he was not much more than a blip on the NATIONAL radar. Then the hit came and Clowney mania exploded. Yes, seriously.

He was #6 in the Heisman voting as a Sophomore DE. I think that classifies him as higher than just another good player. People had already said, before this hit, that he would be the first pick of the draft this year, if he could come out. I understand your point that the hit has become the moment that everyone thinks of when they think of Clowney, but he was already hyped as possibly the best player in all of football the last two years. The hit just became that play that usually is referred to as a players Heisman moments.

Wow. The hit escalated his status to the general population...who didn't even care about football. However, before that everyone in CFB still recognized he was likely to be the 2014 number 1 pick in the NFL Draft and still go Top 5 in the 2013 (if it was possible).

He was also in the Heisman race and led or near the top of multiple national statistic categories.

He was being talked about as a gamechanger WAY before "The Hit"...they called him a "1 in 25 years" player. Maybe it's just you who didn't realize it I guess.

So in your mind he hadn't realized his potential or played to the level he's capable of until that Hit? Just to clarify your position here. Prior to the attention from that hit he wasn't living up to his potential? He was "just another very good player"?

You do remember this don't you?

Clowney was talked about as the best highschool prospect in the last 15-20 years by some people. If you saw his HS highlight tape you knew there was no way he'd be a bust.

Up here he wasn't all that talked about as much as he is now.
I remember during heisman time I "campaigned" but many didn't know as the conversation was mostly Manziel, Teo, Klein.
The people that did know how great he was were the ones that went to college football schools (predominantly SEC schools)

But after the hit then follow that with this debate should he play or not, he has became a household name up here.

And he earned that.
It wasn't just the hit, that play was the 2nd part of a 2-parter....it was also the passion to get the ball back after the bum call and most people got that.

I absolutely agree that the Hit launched him into a different stratosphere of exposure. I'm just speaking to the "he was just another good player" post. He was more than that. he was on the cover a national sports magazine at 17. He was 6th in Heisman voting as a sophomore DE (weeks before "The Hit"). Exposure does not equal performance and I think the other poster is confused or misinformed about some things.

Trust me when I say that I am neither confused nor misinformed about ANYTHING thank you very much. JC was considered a great talent and a can't miss prospect BEFORE the hit. I GET THAT. The point I was making is that THE HIT took everything to another level. But before the hit Dan Patrick was not talking about JC EVERYDAY, JC was not getting interviewed by Tom Rinaldi, JC was not EVERYWHERE like he was after THE HIT. I am in no way, shape or form taking anything away from JC, all I'm saying is THE HIT and the exposure he received from it took JC to levels of exposure and hype that he was not receiving before.

Okay. But you did refer to him as "just another real good player" until The Hit. That's all.
