There may not be a wide receiver prospect in the 2014 class that has seen his stock rise as much in recent weeks as DeAndre Thompkins (Swansboro, N.C.). The 6-foot-0, 170-pound playmaker with legitimate 4.4 speed has picked up offers from Clemson, Notre Dame and Tennessee this week along to go with previous offers from Penn State, North Carolina, West Virginia, N.C. State, Duke, Georgia Tech, East Carolina and others.

In person, Thompkins has a wiry strong look about him with the frame to carry 185-pounds or more. On video, the budding two-sport star shows explosive speed, subtle make you miss ability and excellent balance with the ability and skill set to play receiver or corner on the next level.

When looking down the line in the recruitment of Thompkins, an offer from Florida would potentially be a game changer. While Thompkins doesn’t list a favorite currently, visits to Penn State. West Virginia, Notre Dame and Tennessee are likely on the horizon.

One of the most impressive prospects in last weeks trip through the Carolina’s was the speedy Thompkins. The 6-foot-0, 170-pounder is one of the top return men in the 2014 class, and is seemingly getting faster by the day. While the majority of programs are recruiting him as a wide receiver, he could play on either side of the ball at the next level with a combination of explosive quickness, straight line speed, change of direction, jumping ability, length and physicality. Penn State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, West Virginia, N.C. State and a growing list of others have offered.

On tape, there's no doubt that De'Andre Thompkins is one of the most electric return men in the nation, but coming into the camp there were still questions about him as a wide receiver. The high three-star put all those to rest on Sunday, lighting up the competition with his speed and route-running ability.

Thompkins recently picked up and accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-American Game, and for good reason. He was running reps side-by-side with Rivals250 wide receiver Trevion Thompson and held his own with the heralded prospect.

The two have very different games -- Thompson is a taller possession type receiver -- but Thompkins has a unique combination of speed, route-running ability and hands that can't be overlooked.

Thompkins is the lone three-star of the group, but, according to Farrell, his display at the camp will elevate the ranking from his current spot as the No. 34 athlete nationally.

He only had four receptions as a junior but carried the ball 175 times for 1,359 yards and was timed at The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas with a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash.

Thompkins was invited to play at the Under Armour All-American Game in January.


The 6-foot-1, 170-pound speedster from Swansboro (N.C.) High did more than just prove he belonged, he changed his national perception. "We really thought of him as a kick-returner before this," Farrell said. "His tape has an entire section of really impressive returns and we thought he could play receiver. Now we see that he is an explosive playmaker that is a receiver."
