I saw the Pope on the Horseshoe (but didn't go to the Willy B.) I was in the band and we played the Olympic fanfare as he entered the Horseshoe and was driven around to the President's house in the Popemobile. Then we played "Sto Lat," which is a Polish song that translates to "May you live to be 100." We students chanted "John Paul II, we love you!" and he replied "It is true, John Paul II, he loves you, too." Then he said it is wonderful to be young, it is wonderful to be young and a student, it is wonderful to be young and a student at the University of South Carolina. And the crowd, as they say, went wild. :D

Getting back to Willy B, we played Western Carolina that week. The student organizations used to make banners to hang in the stadium for the games. I remember one said "We've been blessed by the Pope, now the 'Cats have no hope!"

I saw U2 there, but we were in the upper deck and the acoustics were horrible. And unfortunately, my strongest memory of that night was a couple of guys being extremely rude and gross to my sister and myself. Thankfully, most of my memories in Williams Brice are better than that. :)

I used to love hearing taps played. Now that my daughter and her husband are in the military and deployed overseas, I can hardly bear it. I want never to hear it played for them.

I get what you're saying, and I hope you don't take this as me being a smart ass, but the playing of taps is not just for funerals, though that's how civilians have come to know it.
