Judging a schedule based on top 25 wins in a sport with well over 300 teams seems like more of a joke to me. Their out of conference schedule, the opponents they actually control, is just fine. It's one of the top 25 in the country. I'm not going to stick up for their conference because outside of the top 3 or so teams, it's not very good. But, as the earlier numbers showed, their schedule is in the upper fifth or so of all of college basketball. Hardly a joke.

Ok, I've been wondering about this too, because the Zags really are intriguing this year. To start this off, I'm not sure why people are saying that Kansas St., the 13th-ranked team in the country who Gonzaga beat, isn't ranked. As far as the tournament goes, normally I look at a team's tournament viability through a combination of depth and matchups. With the frontcourt of Harris-Olynyk-and a couple of big goons they are deep and athletic down low, which is gonna give other teams some serious matchup problems. Some of the best teams like Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, and Duke might have one dominant post player, but they don't have anything like Gonzaga's frontcourt depth. This, combined with the fact that they can really shoot, I think will be enough to get them to the elite eight. They are gonna run into matchup problems, though, when they face an athletic, up-and-down-the-court team like Michigan, especially if that team is led by a good point guard like Trey Burke. Who is a great wing athlete on the zags? Hart? Pangos? I just don't see it. And who is going to guard a great point guard? Cus I love little stockton, but he is not a physical, tough defender. So I think with favorable matchups they could make it to the Final Four, where they will probably run up against a more complete team. However, I think they could be upset early by even a mediocre team like Chapel Hill, Cincinnatti, or Ole Miss (if they make the tourney), who have athletes at every position.

I generally like your posts but you are way off on this one. Gonzaga has been successful for many years. They've had the same schedule for a long time and have gone far in the NCAA tournament.

You may have an argument on this if Butler didn't go to the national title game. However, watch Gonzaga play. I live on the west coast and get to see them more than most of you. They are a good team - strong front court. After watching them play earlier this season, I thought they could be a Final Four team.

Don't judge them on their schedule. Good teams are good teams regardless of who they play. If they were in the SEC, Big East, ACC, etc, they would still make the tournament.

I haven't seen them play and was basing my opinion solely on their schedule. So I will defer to you because you have seen them and know more about them than I. But I still struggle making them #1 because they haven't played a top 10 team. All the other highly ranked teams have.

Gonzaga pretty much locked up the top overall seed last night with their 14th straight win. Also according to ESPN, this is the 15th straight year they are going to the NCAA tournament. Crazy.

It'll be interesting to see how their bracket sets up but I think this team has a chance!

I expect the Zags to falter against the first physical team they face after round 2. Not just because they aren't used to elite bodies defending them, but because they haven't been on the big stage very often this season, as opposed to some of the other top seeds. It's college hoops though, anything can happen. These kids are young, and the refs aren't dictating things as much at this level.

The most consistent thing over that 15 year run: the level of in-conference competition.

The level of competition is what it is .. but Gonzaga does go on the road to play people and they play in preseason tournaments .. Look at this year. They beat OU, Davidson, and K-State on a neutral site. Beat Baylor in Spokane, OSU in Gallagher-Iba, their rival St. Mary's 3 times, BYU twice including at BYU which is a rawkus place to play, and lost a thriller at Butler. I mean you can't say that these guys don't play anyone or that they haven't beaten anyone. They can't control how good their league is but that league does have other good teams in St. Marys and temporarily BYU. Santa Clara was decent this year as well.

This team, IMO, is battle tested especially winning those games on NEUTRAL floors. We'll see though.

I'll just say this. No team west of Texas has made it to the final 4 in the last 33 years (1979 Magic- Bird) other than UCLA 5, Arizona 4, UNLV 3, and Utah 1. So history is certainly not on their side.

I think Gonzaga is a good team and deserves a #1 seed. I also think they're set up for a tournament similar to St. Joseph's had in 2004 where they will win the first round game handily, but the rest are tough, close games with someone eventually getting them before the Final Four.

I usually dont put a lot of stock in Gonzaga once the tournament rolls around, but this isn't a typical Gonzaga team. They're front line is fantastic and they have decent guard play and depth. Depending on who they're matchup with I could see this team making a run to the final four

They have depth across the board and have a great coach. Also with Olynk, Harris, and Dower down low they can play with anybody. Not saying they are going all the way but I feel that they will advance farther than they have recently. Kinda biased though as I am a fan! Go Zags!
