Just to add this little tidbit: After Byrd dropped the ball, not one, but BOTH of his feet landed in bounds.

Fair enough. Must've been thinking about Nick Jones' drop the play before or something. Hope the LASIK works for Damiere and he doesn't drop any footballs this year.

I hope he plays a lot. I miss Alshon, but little bro might ease that. I have heard he is a fantastic athlete.

But what I had meant as if we have a big time go to 60 + catch guy along with secondary WRs... just because we have a true #1 doesn't mean he becomes a "black hole", that logic does not compute. AJ was that because Garcia caused it!!! Why can't we have a bonafide #1 AND balance? That's what I'm getting at

Go Cocks!

More often than not, we have had a "bonafide # 1" WR... Sidney Rice, McKinley, Alshon... we're only one year removed from Alshon and our passing numbers improved... We've done better at WR than a lot of schools and we are currently grooming Shamier and/or Shaq to be the next "bonafide # 1"... Again, WR has not been an issue with our current staff.

Does anyone know when espn recruiting rankings come out? I know this is the spring practice thread, but it won't let me post on the recruiting threads for some reason.

I couldn't agree more sir. And I had never thought of it until the surgery was brought up on here originally, but I do believe that's going to be what helps him become the player we all want him to be. Of course every receiver drops passes every once in a while. I mean even Alshon Jeffery had drops. In fact, in 2010, Jeffery had two drops that were nearly identical, both of which resulted in a defender coming up with a diving interception, one against Auburn (the one that ended the game), and one against Alabama. I do believe some folks have been overly critical of Byrd, so I do understand your desire to defend him, FWIW.

Alshon was a great player but when you have a guy like him at WR he tends to become a black hole. I don't think its a coincidence that USC's passing offense was BETTER without him because more touches went around which made USC even more difficult to defend. I'll take 2 or 3 receivers with 40+ catches over having ONE guy absorb most of the targets every day.

Spurrier's best passing offenses at USC have been where the #2 receiver has 40 or more catches (2006 - Kenny McKinley, 2010 - Tori Gurley, 2012 - Ace Sanders).

Spurrier's best passing offenses at UF were with 3 receivers (Hillard, Green, Anthony) (Gaffney, Caldwell, Jacobs)
The last line is a bit of a stretch. He ALWAYS had 3 really good WRS many times 4. 1995- Doering (SEC record holder) plus Green, Hilliard, and Anthony. 1994 Jack Jackson, Doering, Anthony, and Hilliard. He had a great WR coach then named Dwayne Dixon, too. He had QBs that would spread it around as well. Year after year UF had AllSEC QBs and especially WRs. Quite a few like Doering were either walk-ons or played another position (Hilliard, Caldwell) in H.S. They were coached up and thrown to. A lot.

The problem at WR has been due to (as usual) more than one thing. Mainly the QBs (then throw in Lattimores greatness the past 3 years, bad recruiting/development at WR for 7..we signed how many this year?) This is the year (and I'm praying I'm right) for the fun and gun to return. From what I hear, the HBC is not gonna put up with a crappy passing attack anymore. IMO, if it doesn't happen this year, an SEC title will not be possible.

I remember the interception "drop" well. The replay showed clearly that the defender pulled down his other arm before the ball got there. Badly missed call, probably cost the game.
I still think the strength of our TE's and backs as receivers will build the whole offense and make the WR's harder to cover. Opponents may have to move a safety up to cover either Busta or Adams - they are too fast for most linebackers to cover. Wilds is quick, with good hands, and Salley looked great at cutting and catching when I watched one-on-ones.

Mine too since Bubba has produced 3 receivers that are in the top 10 in USC history. He has put 5 receivers in the league and that number probably going to be 6 when Bruce is eligible.

Early in Spurrier's tenure (Pre-Beamer), USC tried to get kids signatures by promising them a chance at WR even if they didnt project well there with the understanding if they don't work out they would move. Which is what happened to some of those kids. Others got passed on the depth chart by better players and others just didnt pan out.

USC didnt sign a WR last year because it wasn't a position of need, numbers were tight, and they feel good about their current guys. They were only going to take an elite guy and they didnt get one. They will sign 3 this year and they will all be very good players.

well, sorry. It is what is it (toothsuck). With the HBCs rep as a passing game wizard there is no reason we should'nt clean house in WR recruiting every year. Remember Lecorns (he had some bad luck but the others?) year? I called the recruiting coord. about a kid from the neighborhood, the star of my sons HS football team. 6' tall and could dunk with both hands 4.0 GPA that would've come in on a partial scholarship. No go from the Gamecocks. That kid? Former Stanford star and current Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin.

Sounds like you're letting a grudge cloud your judgement. You have to look at the big picture. We have had a pretty favorable WR situation during the Spurrier tenure.

oh please. 2 years later, when I got wind that a current starter for Miami was wavering, I called Beamer. He called right back & Spurrier called the kid the next day. Didn't work out and was a bit of a longshot but they jumped right on it. They all work hard and play fair. Imo, Spurrier is the best college coach of all time including Bear Bryant.

Just my opinion on WR recruiting that they have missed on some and whiffed on some others (don't think I'm alone?) and an anecdote. No need to act like Freud.

And I agree, we've had a pretty favorable WR situation. I'm just wanting "very" favrorable & to see those 5 wide sets again and more (at least 2 WRs every year) recruits.
