This has to be one of the most ridiculous rules ever passed now runners will be running upright and easy targets for defenders

I think its one thing for a guy to have a hard time getting out of bed because of the game, but to suffer from psychosis and whatever else seemingly healthy guys do, I dunno. Also is it fair for people to say "Hey they signed up for it" when we are just now learning about the long term effects of the head trauma?
I'm not joking at all. Mentally stable people don't flip out and kill people in the first place. People have been killed over a lot less than being angry about football rules in this world. A quarter? a dime? No reason at all. Any reason at all could be the reason if it happens. It's something that is totally beyond anyone's control. Just because someone is crazy it doesn't mean they have something physically wrong with their brain. Some people want to think that because they can't understand why people do these things, so they try to come up with a logical explanation to try to grasp it, but really there is very little logic involved when it comes to craziness.

This is not the first year the NFL has made "controversial" rule changes. And each year people say this is killing the game. Last time I checked, however, the league is now vastly more popular than ever before and vastly more profitable.

This league will continue on this track even with this rule. The only impact it have on the game is that it will protect the players. Which is what the fans want to see. They watch and go to games to see playmakers, not their backups that are playing in place of a concussed player.
I don't really care how popular this other game that has taken football's place is. I just want to see football again.

Didn't care to read through the entire thread but I think its a good rule. I don't see what the big deal is. From the little I have read, coaches approve of it. I think I saw where the fundamental way of doing it is to always keep your head up anyway and dip/drive your shoulder for extra yardage. Could very well be wrong about that though.

Fair enough, but the other problem with the rule is that it's a judgement call. How far does a RB have to lower his head before he gets flagged.

It also applies to WR/TE after the catch. It's hard to try to teach someone to do something different than what he has been doing since he started playing.

Apparently you are not capable of posting without sarcasm. I've found most posters who do that don't have have anything much to add to the discussion anyway.

I actually addressed the concerns from your post and added my opinion on the effect to the league. Just because you chose to ignore those points and play it off with this weak response does not mean I failed to contribute.

You know this is a real thing right? The repeated blows to the head effect these people. It's not always violent behavior, but their brains are being destroyed. And I ask again, is it fair to say "They signed up for it" when players started playing before people knew that this was a probable outcome?

It's not about brains, it's about bank accounts. It's about finding an excuse to have the NFL cover the players' medical expenses for life after football and the NFL trying to find away out of it or least ruin the argument that they turned a blind eye in court. Even after this rule the player brains are still going to be at risk, probably not any less so. It's just part of the game. It's the price for glory and high salaries. Players understand this but, they are are going to try to get every single dime they can in the process. Boxing and MMA are worse sports for damaging brains and unless you are elite you do not make nearly as much as the #2 WR on an NFL team. They don't make rules that say you can't hit someone in the head with a hook. If it's allowed in those sports there is no reason why shots to head could not also continued to be allowed in football like it has been allowed for 100 years.

The bottom line about this rule, is that this is a violent game and these "infractions" will affect the outcome of games. Then you will have more fans and players complaining than you did before about penalties that were called, and those that were not called. There are too many things to penalize, it's too disruptive for games. Officials are going to have get together and talk about whether he was inside the tackle box or outside, whether they though it was intentional or not. The coaches are going to try to challenge it and yell at the refs. It's just too out of hand. I'm sorry, but I don't really care about "football the business, I will only ever care about "football the sport." And while football the business is doing pretty well, football the sport is going to crap, because they are not letting them play.

Another reason why it is not fair, is that a defender has to actually hit someone above the shoulders before it's a penalty. They should at least put the same caveat in for RB's. If you are trying to make something fair, don't overcompensate.

Dumb rule. We're almost to Roger Goodell's dream of a Flag Football League.
