The biggest reason was that it had never happened in the UFC before. Womens MMA has been around for several years but had taken place in competing promotions like Strikeforce and Elite XC. They even have a new promotion for women only, called Invicta. But the UFC is the 800 lb Gorilla of MMA and Dana White had vowed to "never" have women in the UFC.

The next big reason was the champ Ronda Rousey. She has taken the sport by storm and is an exciting blend of skill, ferocity, panache and beauty that is rare in ANY sport.

Much anticipated match that didn't fail to deliver. Liz Carmouche took Ronda to her longest fight yet. By fighting out of an early standing neck crank (Liz couldn't quite sink the rear naked choke in), Ronda patiently softened her up and positioned for the arm bar. Patiently waiting she wore down great defense by Liz until the inevitable submission with about 10 seconds left in the round.
