Yeah, it's definitely a theory. You definitely cannot prove that or else we wouldn't even be having this discussion. You said that his problems were a result of him maxing out and realizing he couldn't meet the expectations... He was a discipline problem almost as soon as he landed on campus... again, your theory makes no sense. You obviously don't understand that noone can reach their maximum potential without giving maximum dedication and effort. That's a universal law which applies to anyone. Therefore, if he did not give maximum dedication and effort, it is impossible for him to have reached his maximum potential. If you can prove that the basic laws of humanity do not apply to Stephen Garcia, I would love to hear it, if not, you can cease your nonsense.
You're putting words into my mouth and reading into my comments something that isn't intended.

He hit his ceiling on the field....his off-field problems he brought with him, but the expectations on him from the fan base did not help him with his off-field problems and IMO magnified them. I've had several friends from my partying days who could not stop and it was clear that something else was driving the partying besides just wanting to have a good time. Most people get this. And most people when they have a kid, suddenly grow up.

He was a good QB for us who had some brilliant games and big plays. But he consistently stuggled with accuracy, touch, and certain mental aspects of the game that no amount of prep or dedication would solve.

Now go back and read some past threads on this...I'm done. I wish Stephen nothing but the best.

Maybe but maybe not. The problem is we will never know because Garcia never put the time in to be the best QB he could be. Things like sleeping through team meetings and showing up for skel drills in flip flops and crocks and playing video games before the bowl game rather than preparing for the game are what drove Spurrier crazy. He frustrated Spurrier to no end with his lack of preparation which was a bigger problem than his off the field stuff. That was just a sideshow. Spurrier said that he had never had a QB who started as many games as Garcia that he refused to take to the SEC Media Days in the summer. And he didn't take him because he didn't deserve to go according to Spurrier. That in a nutshell is the enigma of Garcia.

Don't want to get in the middle of your argument, but surely you realize Garcia is without a doubt in the Top 3 of the best quarterbacks this university has ever put on the field. Depending on your personal tastes in statistics that a QB should excel at, he could very well be considered THE best.

You're right. If Garcia had dedicated himself 100% and done everything the right way on and off the field, he would have been exactly the same player. Yep.

I think there is significant doubt as to whether or not he is in the top 3 and no rational way to consider him #1.

While our overall history in quarterback talent and play may not blow anyone away when reading the statistics, I can surely say Stephen Garcia is a Top 3 Gamecock quarterback. Do I wish the bar wasn't so low already? Of course. Do I wish and think Garcia could have left here clearly as the best in history? Not a doubt if you look at the statistics. The guy pissed me off on the field a lot and made some bonehead plays...but he also had his moments.

The problem with these stats is that as time progresses it is very likely they will mean less and less. Numbers are fine when comparing guys from the same era and systems but football has changed significantly over the years to focus more on the passing game. This means guys are throwing it more frequently and as such tend to put up more numbers. Problem is numbers don't make you a better QB and to make decisions based only on stats is flawed at best.

That is irrelevant and I already mentioned that. I never said Garcia will remain the 3rd best quarterback at Carolina throughout time...or even hold that in the next 15 years. Truth is, our football talent and records have really sucked and haven't been too hard to break up until the last 10 years or so.

All I was pointing out is that right now, Garcia is easily in the Top 3.

Both of y'all have good points.

It's kinda like Dan Marino and the nfl. The numbers he put up when he was playing were crazy. No one thought they'd ever be touched. And only 25 years later the game has changed so much that if your not putting up the type of numbers he did you are having a bad day.

Does that mean qbs today are better than him? Nah. It's just that the game has changed so much.

That's really the point. Just because a guy in the modern era puts up numbers it doesn't make them a better QB than the guys that came before him.

There's different ways to look at that.

That may very well simply show that, garnet glasses aside, we haven't had truly great QB's here.

It also may show that had he had the motivation and inclination to be better, he could've been without a doubt the best we've ever had, since he seemed to half-ass it the whole time he was here.

Either way, it's a moot point.

What are you talking about? The man posted actual stats that prove he is currently a top 3 all time QB at USC in stats and wins...and yet you somehow try and argue it. Will somebody come along and break those records? Probably. Do we have a rich QB tradition at USC? No. But, Stephen Garcia is in the top 3 of that history for right now.

Because the "actual stats" only prove that he played at a time when passing was a bigger part of the game. Using the "actual stats" logic you'd have to consider Vinny Testaverde a greater QB than Dan Marino.

Stats are great for comparing guys from the same era but they can be very misleading when you don't take into account how many more games guys play today or how many more passes they throw now. Looking at yardage also doesn't take into account turnovers, the talent around the player or what type of system they played in.

If you're only looking at yardage then yes he's clearly in the top 3. If you're looking at overall QB play then he's most likely not.
