They say that Time of Possession is the most meaningless stat in College Football these day. Look at the T.O.P. numbers for the past 5 years, they tend to disagree.

Time of possession isn't particularly meaningful, at least on its own.

It's just a result of the fact that our defense has controlled Clemson's offense in these games, either forcing punts or turnovers, and our offense has been able to sustain drives. It's also somewhat indicative of the fact that, particularly Saturday, the offense had very few big, explosive plays.

Fast-paced offenses like Clemson and especially Oregon score so quickly that they don't hold the ball very long, nor do they need to. So you could see - and there have surely been games in which this was the case - with a T.O.P similar to the above but instead of 17 points, the team on the low end scores 40. Just look at Clemson's first TD drive - went 75 yards in 1:38 after Carolina's 80 yard TD drive that took over 8 minutes. Sure the T.O.P looks nice, but at that point it was still a 7-7 game.

Well, to be honest, time of possession is kind of meaningless. If the defense does a good job of keeping the other team out of the endzone, then it doesn't matter if your own scores come from 6-minute drives or 6-second drives.

What I mean is this: CU's offense (since Morris has been there) has been known for its ability to score and score quickly at times. Let's say CU's average scoring drive were to be 3 minutes (which would be really fast). If the defense doesn't do its job, that means CU could have scored 7 times on Saturday.

So while it's neat we've been able to be ball hogs the past 5 years, I think it's only a coincidence the time of possession coincides with winning. To make my point clearer, just look at this year's game against MSU. They had the ball 7.5 minutes more than we did and still lost by 18.

Then you haven't been listening, because lots of "experts" say the T.O.P. stat is essentially meaningless. Let's say a team who has a really solid (not great) offense that happens to run the triple option all the time and has a horrible defense plays a team with a "bend-but-don't-break" defense but the most prolific scoring offense in the country. Due to the clock-draining nature of the triple option, it's quite possible the team running it could DOMINATE T.O.P. and still get blown out because the other team scores in 1-3 minutes every time they get the ball.

TOP is meaningless if you're not scoring touchdowns and your defense is giving up quick scores. The key to beating clemson is scoring on your opportunities and making them drive the length of the field. If that means you have a greater TOP then, so be it.

As opposed to trolling this thread, I agree with the OP. Time of possession does have a big effect on the outcome of the game. The more you keep these high powered offenses off of the field, the less points they can score. As a result of this... you don't have to score as many points and find yourself in a "shootout" with your opponent. Control the ball, control the game.

TOP is not meaningless in the case of our win streak over Clemson. It would be if the tigers were scoring quickly a lot but they aren't scoring much. We are intentionally keeping the ball for long drives to limit the number of times their offense gets the ball. When you do this it frustrates their offense b/c they are impatient. So it is more about how many possessions they are getting than anything but that in turn spills over into limiting their time of possession. When you limit the # of times they get the ball they obviously have fewer chances to score and if you throw in a few stops by our D then the result is what you have been seeing consistently for 5 years now. TOP is not meaningless you just need to dig below the stat itself to see the overall gameplan that makes it valuable against Clemson for us.

Always exceptions to every rule but if you look at history or look at the best teams in college football you will see the defense keeps the other offense off the field and the offense can sustain drives, NFL or college... We also lost the TOP in the jawja and ut games as well as ken and miss st..."they" may also tell you that stats do not matter since it is only the scoreboard that tells the winner and loser!

Give me one example of an experts name who said "TOP is meaningless", what are they a commentator for the pac 12, look at the top ten teams in the nation and tell me one of them that loses the TOP, bama leads the SEC and the nation, you will also find ohio st, florida st, auburn....meaningless
