Now we've jumped from having bowl eligible teams finishing outside the Top 25, to double-digit-win teams finishing in the Top 10.

So either the "hump" has moved, or there's multiple "humps".
Totally agree and I still hate it.

While I applaud any of these guys wanting to go make some $$, it will never sit right with me the way all of this goes down. CFB, and especially the SEC is now the minor leagues for the NFL. And the entire sports media has over-hyped this whole thing to where guys leaving early is portrayed as some kind of honor or status milestone to be desired.

Wish somehow the NCAA and CFB could dam some of this up and keep the NFL from picking their pockets.

In full agreement. It doesn't sit well with me either. The money will always be there. They can get insured if they want to. I still have not heard of 1 single case of a player deciding to come back for his senior year and then getting injured in that year and losing an NFL career because of it. There are some that got injured in there junior year, but came back to play. the only exception I can think of to that was Tyrone Prothro of Alabama.
Deferred gratification is obviously soemthing that is not preached in the athletics department.

Every team has players leave early. The difference between a good program and a great program, is the great programs have another star to put in the place of the one that just left.

If Troy Williamson would have returned, Sidney wouldn't have gotten the balls thrown to him that he did. If Sidney would have stayed, Alshon wouldn't have gotten the ball thrown to him that he did.

Each of those guys left, and we plugged another star in their place. This year we don't have that star receiver, but we have a great group.

Linebacker attrition from 2010/2011 and not redshirting some of our 2009 guys hurt. Still a good season to build on with a young group of guys.
Our offense has been the problem all year. Yes the D had to improve, but with the talent and leadership on offense they should've carried the team and they didn't. We would be on the doorstep of an SEC title right now had the offense beat UT.

SOS needs to overhaul the offense; it hasn't been very good since he got here, which is disappointing.

I look at it like this. I look at each team the last 3 years and I think, we tripped ourselves up (especially this year). With the exception of UGA, who was mostly healthy when we played them and was a toss up game, we should have won every game. 5 years ago that wasn't the case at all.

We are right now where the best teams in the SEC are every year. 1-2 non-slip ups away from going undefeated. That's a pretty dang good place to be because when you're there enough, you'll start coming out on top sometimes.

Nick Saban must be rubbing his crystal ball on a daily basis. Sure it didn't pan out for him this season, but I'll be damned if he isn't right there every year. Had his lackluster field goal unit actually tried to tackle on the last play of the iron bowl, he & Alabama might would still be there.

Yes, as dominant as they are they still lost last season and needed others to lose, too. And did you watch the seccg? They got lucky. Doesn't mean they weren't the better team, you still have to catch breaks along the way.

And the year before, losing to lsu, not even going to the seccg, and managing to luck out with a rematch? Lol.

Yes, even bama has gotten lucky when they needed to.

Bama never really has a problem with it... They're winning national titles regardless.

are challenged to build depth in the wake of more underclassmen bolting for the NFL. Before Spur coached FL, they were good, but not great. He made them National contenders. SC was a bigger task, but the last 3 years y'all have been very close. Timing is part, if FL and GA fell off last year like this year; SC easily wins the SEC East.

The OP did not say we are the only team this happens to.

I agree with the OP because we do not recruit on the level of perennial contenders. So we need to either have a really talented group of 4th and 5th year guys or we need to recruit better talent. And Ace very well could have made a difference in both the UGA and UT games. He was a game changer on special teams and at WR.

This is not to say individuals are "at fault" for leaving. By all means get your millions while you can.

But it seems for us, a team that isn't atop the recruiting rankings, we need to have the perfect storm of talent and experience and we haven't had that yet.

I believe that if last year's LB corps - or even three of them hadn't left, we would be undefeated at this point. Add in Swearinger, I'm pretty sure of it. None left early. Even with that, we had chances in both games with the personnel we had and didn't execute. We stand to be strong for the next 3 years because we have 45 (out of 83 scholarships) freshmen and RS freshmen. We have quality at almost every position, and our coaches are recruiting needs over "stars." Having only a few slots open and bringing in a small class is a nice luxury (that ironically lowers your recruiting class ranking). If the players we have develop as they can. If the new fill-ins are ready. If the players develop in the off season and show the kind of dedication and leadership Conner Shaw exhibited. We will be as stout as any. Even the "elite" mess up against teams they should beat. We are a top program that plays a tough schedule.

This. As the HBC would say about Gamecock players leaving early, "It is what it is." Carolina just has to continue to make inroads in recruiting big time players from the highschool level from various regions of the country, and most importantly, continue beating Clemson to the majority of the best SC based highschool talent, especially on the lines of scrimmage. We aren't there yet, but it gets better each year that the HBC is here.

By no means is this a bash on anyone. This is just a realization that has come to mind and how we are always "so close," but never get over the hump... Now, I do not know, or actually care of why anyone who gets a free ride to school for 4 years, doesn't take full advantage of that... I don't care to venture that way because I will never know why those men decide to leave early. Be it personal, financial, bordom, whatever... But, when I feel that we would be in a lot better place if some of our star athletes would have stayed just that 1 more year...

If Troy Williamson would have stayed his senior year, him and Sidney Rice would have done SO much damage. If sidney rice didn't leave early him and Mo Brown for 1 year, could have done amazing things... If Ko Simpson stayed his Senior year, our D would not have collapsed like it did in 2006... If Stephon Gilmore, Alshon Jeffery, and Tori Gurley stayed, 11-1 before the bowl game, maybe even in the SEC... If Ace Stayed, I believe we would have been undefeated... Again, I do not know, or care to know the reasons why these young men decided to leave early, but, I know that they are happy with their decisions.

Coach Spurrier encourages the boys to do what is right for them. That is always a great thing to know that your coach has your back! But it's like we are always stuck just that 1 step away from getting over with our amazingly talented position players, who has came in and made a name for themselves leave that 1 year early!

I know every school goes through this, and some deal with it better than others, and over the years, it has been proven that our team has handled the missing pieces very well... But it still begs the question: What if that missing piece was there? I can hear some of you know... "But what if they came back and get injured?" Well, what if they didn't get injured? What if, statistically speaking, that last year could have been their best, and helped their draft stock a little bit more?

But with all that said, this is what I believe... I believe that we will always be on the door step, as long as we have to re-up on the big names... With Victor and Jadeveon making the decision to leave early, and whoever else, it just makes it hard to actually find someone who wants to actually make it over the hump... This is my opinion, and I know some of yall will disagree with me, and some may, I don't care... this is what I feel is going to happen, until I am proven wrong... however they decide, May the Good Lord bless each and every one of those young men, and their families in the future. Forever Gamecocks!!!

Thats all... (sorry for being so long winded)

Thoughts?
Have you ever applied for a coaching position at Clemson? You would probably get some heavy consideration.
