Default Can Jackie Bradley Jr. replace Jacoby Ellsbury? (WEEI)

Looks like the Yanks have signed Ellsbury, so our guy Jackie will become the day to day CF for the Bosox.

The question revolves largely around what kind of impact the Red Sox might realistically be able to get from Bradley and what they got last year from Ellsbury. But before exploring that question, it’s necessary to note that this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison.

Not necessarily. They still have Victorino, Nava, Gomes in the outfield and there have been talks about signing Shin-Soo Choo. JBJ is gonna have to prove that he can do better than last year before the Sox just give him the starting job with no backup plan

Red Sox comfortable with JBJ replacing Ellsbury, but exploring other options (MassLive)

But the simplest scenario is one where Bradley takes over in center, allowing Victorino to stay in right and the Red Sox to use some combination of Daniel Nava, Jonny Gomes and/or Mike Carp in left field. The depth of the team makes for an easy back-up plan if Bradley were to be deemed not ready, the team believes in his ability defensively and seems inclined to at least give him a chance.

"You know, I think defensively, he's an everyday Major Leaguer now," manager John Farrell said earlier this offseason. "I think we all recognize that the first year for most players, particularly position players, there's a transition he's going to go through, and along the way comes some bumps in the road. I think Jackie went through those."

What's next for the Sox in CF?

Jackie Bradley Jr. -- Barely eight months ago, after he tore up the Grapefruit League, the debate going on in these parts was about whether it was wise for the Sox to have Bradley start the season in the bigs because it could potentially allow him to reach free agency a year earlier than he would otherwise.
That proved to not be a concern, as Bradley wound up playing 80 games at Triple-A, and so he'll remain under team control for six more seasons. But let's not lose sight of the type of talent this guy was considered to be then, and should still be considered now. He struggled in his 107 major-league plate appearances over three separate stints -- batting .197 -- though in his first season at Triple-A he posted a .374 on-base percentage, which led to an .842 OPS.
That's 102 points higher than Ellsbury posted at the same level around the same age, and though Bradley isn't nearly as polished a hitter as Ellsbury is at this point, he has the plate discipline to contribute while correcting the holes that were exposed last April, and his defense in center field might well represent an immediate upgrade for the Sox.
