Default Sake of Argument Vanishes in a Sensible B.C.S. Finale (NYT)

Itís funny, then, how everything played out. How Auburn won a shootout with Missouri to vanquish its second top-five foe in the last two weeks. How Ohio State stumbled for the first time in two years. How Florida State bludgeoned another overmatched opponent.

Where chaos was expected, there was peace.

As those three games barreled toward their conclusions Saturday, it became clear that this seasonís national championship would be created without controversy. The same could be said, for the most part, for all of this seasonís B.C.S. selections. The same could be said for many years of the B.C.S. standings, despite all the ridicule lobbed at the selection process.

Oops: Maybe the SEC Isn't Dead (WSJ)

The Southeastern Conference lives.

Thanks to Michigan State toppling Big Ten Conference alpha dog Ohio State, previously third-ranked Auburn moved up to claim the No. 2 spot in the final Bowl Championship Series rankings and play Florida State for the national championship. Saturday's 180-degree turn of events averted a mini-crisis for college football's ruling conference and gave the SEC a chance to extend its unprecedented stretch of seven straight national titles.

And despite doomsayers in some quarters, even in this newspaper, things turned out for the best. This way, the SEC can defend its crown in the Jan. 6 title game, instead of in a labyrinthine argument about the BCS.

Of the excluded teams, Oregon (10th) easily had the biggest gripe.
Are they serious??

Who'd Oregon actually beat??
#12 (At the time, #17 now) UCLA @ 9-3?
#16 (at the time, un-ranked now) Washington @ 8-4?

Compared to us, who beat #5 Mizzou who finished 11-2 and went to the SEC-CG?
Clemson who finished 10-2 and is going to the Urnge bowl?
and BCS bound UCF who also finished 11-1 and defeated #8 Louisville.

I think CLEARLY we were the redheaded stepchild of the BCS this year...

Oregon is one team we can't pick on. They did beat the snot out of the same Volunteers program that beat us this year.

But so did Missouri. Vanderbilt also beat UT, so does that mean we can't talk smack to them? Using that logic, I guess we can't exercise our bragging rights over CU since they beat UGA and we didn't.

I believe the reasoning they say Oregon has the biggest gripe is because Oregon was eligible to be picked at 10 but wasn't. We were ineligible to be picked due to the 2 team per conference rule. You can say we have the biggest gripe with the BCS due to the 2 team rule, but with the given BCS rules in place, Oregon got the shaft the worst based on the fact they could have been selected at large over say Clemson and they were not.

Good point, but we did beat Vandy and Mizzou in our head to head contests this year, so we have bragging rights this season over the two of them. Re: our mutual opponent... don't forget, Oregon beat the snot out of TN 59-14; it wasn't close, so IMHO we have less of a bone to pick with them than some.

Aside from an undefeated Auburn team in '02 getting snubbed love it or hate the BCS has done a pretty good job of putting #1 vs #2. I for one will miss it. Bill King made some great points in it's defense this morning on Sirius. Anyone who thinks the playoffs will solve anything is foolish.

Ironically, if the playoff began this season, there would be controversy over who deserved to be the 4th team to join FSU, Auburn & Bama. Michigan State is currently ranked 4th in the BCS; however, under the new system a committee will determine who that 4th team would be. Do you think Condoleezza Rice and Ty Willingham might feel Stanford is more deserving than MSU? What about the members of the committee associated with the Big XII? Would they lobby for the inclusion of Baylor? Would Bama even be a sure thing for a spot? I bet there would be some voices arguing they didn't even win their division and thus aren't as worthy as Stanford, MSU, Baylor, etc.

I'm not suggesting the playoff won't be successful; I'm saying it won't eliminate controversy. Not by a mile.

It is so absurd that Condoleeza Rice is on the committee
