Default Re: 2013-14 Atlanta Braves offseason thread

4 things so far from the winger meetings

1) Braves agreed to terms with Walden on a 1 year deal in the range of 1.5 million to ovoid arbitration. Good news there

2) Braves seem really close to resigning EOF. Bullpen looks to be returning to untouchable again next year.

3) Asking price of Samardzija, Price, and Sale are ridiculously high. Braves don't seem to be going there. But it was also high initially on Justin Upton last year and Frank let it cool down and got a steal with Chris Johnson and Justin Upton. But Atlanta could stand pat with Medlen, Minor, Teheran, Beachy, Wood, and Hale with JR Graham possibly able to contribute somewhere along the way. Worse pitching staffs are out there.

4) Braves are looking at 3 bench players; Eric Chavez, Greg Dobbs (No thanks), and Raul Ibanez. Personal favorite of the 3 is Chavez. Really like him.

Frank said some things look to be in place but a deal may not go down before the meeting end tomorrow

Any word on if we would bid on Masahiro Tanaka, if he posts?

From the sound of it, we're not going to be spending big money this offseason.

I think if we get a major acquisition it's through trade

Buster Olney is saying that the Braves should try to trade Kimbrel soon. He said with arbitration coming up, Kimbrel is gonna make some unreal total from it due to the fact that no one has had the numbers he's had so early in a career. I would be pissed if we traded Craig.

You cannot pay him so you have to see if there is a deal where you make out with a couple young stud prospects. If not, keep him until you cannot pay him and he walks

I could understand a Kimbrell trade for a stud starter. That's a lot to give up though...

I believe that Kimbrel is such an elite player you must make sacrifices to keep him. He as a closer, single-handedly wins games...period.

We went through 4 mediocre closers from 2005-2009 and it hurt us in the wins column. Reistma, Wickman, Gonzalez, Soriano...

I would dare say a dominant closer is more important than a great starter.

We've all seen the braves lose too many games in the 9th before Kimbrel arrived.

I tend to agree with you. However, as we learned this past season, we need starting pitching that can get the game to Kimbrell in the first place. Hopefully the young guys will step up.

You would be hard pressed to find many baseball people that would agree with you. Less than 50% of all wins in MLB involve a save. Also, just look at the salaries to see the great divide between the value of starting pitching and that of a closer. Not even close.

Very good info in the research papers on this site:

Yeah, I can't be on board with a closer, no matter how dominant, being more valuable than a starter. A couple of years ago, statisticians from the site you posted found that the winning percentage of teams going into the 9th inning with a 1, 2, or 3 run lead has pretty much stayed the same for 80 years. That goes back before the save and before managers put too much emphasis on the save and generated the closer role. If I recall correctly, teams with a 1 run lead win the game 85% of the time, a 2 run lead about 94% of the time, and a 3 run lead 98% of the time. Overpaying for those 3 outs when you're probably going to win anyways is silly. An ace reliever's job should be to be used in the highest leverage situation regardless of inning and score.

And the Braves have signed Gavin Floyd to a $4 million contract with possibly 4.5 million more in incentives. He won't be ready to pitch until May or June. Don't like it. But whatever

I can't believe the Braves gave $4 mill guaranteed to a pitcher with a lifetime ERA of 4.48, coming off Tommy John surgery, and won't be back until May or June at the earliest. Also, did anybody see how Frank Wren tried to spin it like Floyd would be back by Opening Day and Floyd himself said he was skeptical of that prediction? Needless to say I don't like this deal

Not too thrilled with the Floyd signing either. I'm not surprised about it though. Seems like we've signed or traded for high priced veteran pitchers a lot lately. We've had varying results with it, but since we're going to be outbid for the truly elite free agents, it's what we have to do.

I think the Floyd move is a good one. Cheap price compared to the other contracts being thrown around, and he'll benefit from the ballpark and NL. We have 6 other good pitchers, so we shouldn't need him right away. I'll take this move over giving Hudson 2/24 or trading too much for Price or Samardjiza

True. This is a one year deal to add depth/ hopefully get lucky with a comeback season for a former 4 overall pick. I've heard the demands for szamardja (sp?) and Price were ridiculous.

Cubs wanted Heyward or JUp. Lol

Rays wanted Wood, Bethancourt, and 2 more. Which isn't awful, but you must also consider that we'd have to pay him, that'd effect our ability to pay others, etc.

I'll take Floyd and keep our youngsters and cash, personally.
