Default Re: Curious Why Connor Didn't do ROTC?

What will really help Connor get an opportunity in the NFL is how well Russell Wilson is playing this year. Connor is a smart, bright guy like Russell, he's a leader, can scramble, and can run. I don't think he can throw as well but I think he'll get some looks. He has a lot of qualities that NFL teams may find intriguing.

No reason he couldn't be a good 2nd or 3rd string NFL QB. If I had been running the Panthers last year, I would have dumped Jimmy Clausen in favor of Shaw in about 2 milliseconds.

If it doesn't work out, it's not hard to imagine the guy as a general some day.

Like posted above, OCS if he wants to be in the officer corp. He may wind up doing something entirely different.
Just out of curiosity, what does OCS entail? How does someone go through that process and how long does it take?

Might be a nice guy to have around. I could see him playing a role. Put in a few packages he could run some plays from and keep him on as a serviceable backup. Never seen a QB that didn't have good hands. With his work ethic could be a Wes Welker type. And another thought, put on 15-20 pounds of muscle and think Bill Bates 2.0. There are a lot of possibilities for a guy with his athleticism, football smarts, and work ethic. No to mention, the kid is a winner.

OCS...Is officer school and its separate from enlisted men. OCS consists of 12 weeks of training, it is two phases.

Phase One is basic skills to become a leader while Phase two is 18 days of complete HELL!

OCS is for college grads who enlist as officers. It fills out the officer corp ranks with guys other than those that went through ROTC or got commissions via a US military academy.

ROTC is a recruiting vehicle for officers...they offer to pay for college in exchange for military service in the officer corp. Military academies like The Citadel, VMI, and TAMU have ROTC as well as lots of regular colleges including USC...they typically get sworn in after they graduate, although some of those guys may already be active/res/guard.

I'm pretty sure USAFA, USNA, and USMA are all by appointment only and all students are sworn in as freshmen or even upon graduating from HS. They have to fulfill military time upon graduating since they are on active/res. duty while in school.

16 weeks. I went through the Navy AOCS which was discontinued. We had Marine Drill Instructors training us. Imagine getting yelled at a lot, having your head shaved, having the back of your belt buckle inspected, fighting in a smoker against a dude that boxed in college, sleeping on the floor under your rack because you don't have time to make it at O-dark-30, and doing a lot of PT along with academics and no sleep for sixteen weeks.

Connor could navigate it with ease.

ROTC is very time consuming. I was in ROTC at USC and we had classes 3 days a week, lab 1 day a week, PT(Physical Training) 3 days a week in the mornings and we had to do one weekend a month of training (usually Sat/Sun; sometimes Fri/Sat/Sun). This doesn't include some of the extra activities that they decide are mandatory.

All that being said, Warrant Officer is the best route.

Not the way it works. OCS is for officers. You can go as enlisted, but you don't just get promoted to E4 to E5 right off the bat based on the degree. Plus when you finish OCS you will be an officer and start as an O-1.

Lots of time when you go to ROTC in (College) school you are getting E5 pay, but you are not considered enlisted unless you actually joined as enlisted.

You can enter the Army as an E4 if you have a college degree, but to go to E5 they have to have a slot for you, and a promotion package, and you have to have the time in service and the time in grade. They don't just promote to E5 because you played football.

I highly doubt that someone that plays college football at the level of Connor Shaw would have time for ROTC.

This is closest to the 'right answer"...granted my knowledge is a tad dated since I'm a former AFROTC, and then Regular Army enlisted...I opted not to go to OCS after enlisting because I got a 'better school deal" that I really wanted to go to before OCS..After OCS, it would have committed me to over 5 years...6 years in the Air Force after ROTC with pilot training.

I'm guessing you still enlist and go through basic and then to OCS?? That may have changed since I was early Vietnam era. By the time I'd gone in, all of the OCS schools were closed except for Infantry, Armor, and Art'y...which would have been a waste with the linguistic training I had at the time which landed me at NSA...We generally intimidated most of the officer's there because "we were smarter"!

His quote.

“Football is still my priority,” said Shaw, who is 17-3 as a starter. “I am going to take football as long as it’ll take me. Whenever that may end, that’s when I’ll go into Officer Candidate School.”

LOL...you understand..."college boy" makes you a target in basic training, anyway...you might be smarter than your other platoon members, but a DI doesn't give a rat's backside! You are still gonna get pushed and pushed harder...I was a squad leader because of ROTC training, but we didn't get any slack from a DI. In fact, we got pushed harder because we were supposed to have already had some leadership training.

But, as it is in most training, basic, advanced, SEAL, etc...it's a heckuva lot more mental that physical...If you can overcome your head, the body will follow in most cases.

ROTC takes a lot of time. Football takes a lot of time. College is the best years of your life, if you want to spend your best years getting ready for an inspection when you could be chasing p*$$% go for it. I had fun in college then went into the USMC as an OCC. ROTC's get regular commissions, but if you go in with a reserve commission you can still get a regular commission if you are good enough (get augmented).

So, if you want a career in the military go through ROTC, you owe them 8 to 12 years for the college and flight training. If you just want to do the military thing for a while and then do something else with your life go thru OCC or PLC and have some fun.

Nothing better than being an Infantry Officer in the USMC in California when you are 21 years old....
