As for the RB situation it's definitely 1. Davis 2. Wilds, but after that I feel like Spurrier will give both Carson and Williams chances and whoever has the hot hand will be the 3rd back there. And I hate to say it but we lose a RB to injury on a yearly basis so everyone will probably move up at some point and get more chances.

The center position is also a quaisi cluster. At times, Waldrop seemed to be easily confused and made some bonehead plays. You have Clayton who played well when Waldrop was hurt. Does anyone else have a chance to get into the mix at center? It seems like that is an area where we could see new blood.

Knott is there but I don't see why we would need new blood there when Waldrop and Stadnik proved they were capable last season and both are still young guys

My opinion of it is just the opposite. I'd like to see the "HOT" guy stay
in as long as he's "HOT". All athletes have stretches where they get into
a rhythm, and that's when you (as a coach or team mate) get on his back
and ride. We did it with Marcus Lattimore, we did it with A Jeff, Sidney
and Kenny McKinley etc... Once you see that guy "doing what he does
best", then you keep feeding the beast until the other team stops him.

My biggest source of frustration with Coach Spurrier / his staff is that
he sometimes ignores the ground attack (or uses it very little) early in
the game when our RBs have come off excellent games the week before.
Saying he / they don't even try to get the RBs enough reps to get hot
early on. Several games this year, Mike entered the second half with
less than 20 yards rushing on just 2/3 carries and then the coach uses
him (and the ground attack) basically to control the clock in the second
half or to try to get some momentum going late in the game. To me, that
is not the way to game plan when you have two / three deep RBs because
if one guy gets hot in the second half, and the coach rides him, then you
have another (or two) excellent backs sitting on the bench who will have
less than 20 yards (IF THAT) by the end of the game, and one that has
90/100+ and most of that coming in the third and fourth quarter.

I agree with you on the LSU analogy. They spread the wealth with 2-3
running backs, and balance their offense early in the game to keep the
defense from making specific adjustments. .... It's OK to ride your hot
hand late in the game, but find out who the "HOT" guy is by spreading
the reps out in the first half and use the ground attack more than 1 time
every two series. ...........The MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS HOWEVER,
is being able to pick up 4 to 6 yard on your first down in each series.
Constantly going 3rd and long will dig you into some really DEEP HOLES,
and we seem to have that going on a lot the past few years.

DB is a position that you see a lot of freshmen playing across the country.
If you have the measurables coming out of High school, then you have a
good chance at starting if the need is there, and you can get the schemes
down early enough. Other than the fundementals, all you need to do is
have the speed to stay with your assignment / man and the skill to try
to disrupt a pass. There's not a lot of reading keys, two area responsibility,
or having to think something through after the snap. .... If you have speed
and decent cover skills, you can start as a freshman and learn the fine
points of the position at this level as you go.

Not sure how familiar everyone is with the name Sam Pope, but IMO, he
was the best pure cover DB I've seen at USC. Problem with that was that
he wasn't willing to switch to other positions and even give them a try
in practice, so he left before even getting a shot to play a down in a
Gamecock uniform. All I saw of him was his HS game film and him basically
covering Kenny McKinley like a rubber glove and giving him NOTHING for
a week in practice. This as a true freshman out of HS.

We've had other freshmen DBs to come in a make an immediate impact
on the field. I'm positive we will have at least two freshman starters in
or secondary this fall. I think it's almost a given we'll have to play a couple
of the new guys there.

Lammons is most likely to redshirt of the 3 DB's. Played QB in high school. Hasn't really played enough CB to expect him to start as a true Freshman. I think the coaching staffs thought is Smith or Green will be at CB this year and Smith will move to Safety when Lammons comes into the rotation the following year. TJ Gurley also looked good at Corner when we put him there a few years ago.

Interesting list, C2. Couple things stand out.

1. Williams as the back-up RB over Wilds.

2. Cooper starting at the Z.

3. Two true freshmen CBs as back-ups.

Pretty talented depth chart when you go over it, particularly the starters.

I see you finally hopping on the Golightly bandwagon haha. You were always saying Diggs was gonna take over while I was projecting Golightly all along.

I bet you think that Bryant is going to overtake him this year too. I think he'll log a ton of snaps

Default Re: 2014 Projected Depth Chart

1) I love Brandon Wilds. I think he is an excellent back but he can't stay healthy and he had trouble hanging onto the football last year. Our offense has also started to evolve away from the grind it out formula and become more reliant on the big play. Not only that, but Williams is probably pound for pound the most talented runner on the team. I think fans will see that in the Spring. He is an extremely gifted runner and I just think he is going to be a better fit for us. I know I'll get some funny responses but this same stuff happens at most of the premier schools' depth charts. I mean look at Alabama and Derrick Henry for example. It was the Kenyon Drake/TJ Yeldon show for most of the season and them he comes out and just dominates in the bowl game. Similar situation happened at LSU with Jeremy Hill.

2) Bubba likes stocky built slot receivers because they are typically good blockers. Your LeCorn/Ellington type guys and Cooper fits in that same mold. Also they want to keep Byrd on the perimeter and Jones is just too small. Fuller hasn't shown anything to date which is very disappointing for a former 4 star recruit. The staff absolutely loves Deebo Samuel. He is a smooth athlete with big play ability. A lot of Shake and bake in his game which should he him some opportunities as the season goes on. He is the most ready out of the freshmen receivers to play right now.

3) I think the bowl game pretty much sealed the starting job for Jerell Adams. He had been pushing Anderson late in the season and I think he probably gets at least 60% of the snaps. Maybe Rory gets more when we try to burn clock because he is a solid run blocker but I think Adams is the main guy now.

4) Abu Lamin is our next NFL draft pick on the defensive line. Bonafide stud that is going to step right in for Kelcy Quarles and not miss a beat.

5) Bryson Allen-Williams is big time folks. It may take a few weeks but he is going to find a way onto the depth chart behind Skai Moore and he should definitely be on special teams. Special kid, special athlete. I also think he is a candidate to grow into a DE long term.

6) Staff thinks highly of Ali Groves. His problem is injuries so him being listed as a starter probably needs an asterisk. If he can't stay on the field. DJ Smith finds himself as a starter until next season when Williams graduates and he shifts to the Boundary Safety.

It'll be interesting to see how two others of the legion of boom do in the Fall, Lammons and Harris. Lammons probably could use a redshirt to bulk up a bit .. but given his genes., Harris might be the best pure cover corner of the class. He'll be the guy the staff has to make a tough decision on. It could depend on how well he has recovered from his injury. Another great kid.

Cover2s list seems pretty accurate. Anyone that has Roberts above 4th string wasnt watching our D last year. Still dont get why anyone with a brain thinks we redshirt a guy like Lammons. He signed with us because he has a great chance to play right away. Unless he bombs at practice (or gets injured) and he wknt, we would be liars to RS him. This is how recruiting works now, you dont redshirt highly recruitef kids after selling them on the opportunity to play right away.

I projected Diggs too and I still say that watching Golightly try and hold the edge against Gurley, Rajon Neal, and Melvin Gordon (although this last one was more up the gut) was somewhat painful. I do admit that he made some huge plays at crucial points in games, but he is no super Spur like Antonio Allen or Devonte.

I just don't see Wilds getting knocked out of the RB2 spot barring injury or a meltdown. Williams may be the more talented runner, but Wilds has been in the system for a long time now and has proven his abilities repeatedly on the field vs SEC opponents. Also, Spurrier seems to be pretty loyal to his upperclassmen these days. We all knew that Davis was a more talented runner than Miles, but Miles still got the lion's share of carries in '12 (I realize that that isn't an exact analogy of the Wilds/Williams situation in '14, but you get my point).

No he's not Allen or Holloman but he is the best on the team now

How or where do you think Sawyer and Wideman will factor in to the DL rotation if they're on campus?

I think Shaq & Jeffery will stay at and man the x spot, while Cooper steps in for Bruce. Byrd will start at the other spot. I will say that I honestly believe the Freshman WR's WILL contribute. I'm telling you guys, Deebo Samual is special. Who really knows regarding RG, we'll see after the Spring. I will say I think Gibson is more suited to add depth at RT. Matulis, if he is cleared to play again, can provide quality depth at LT.

On defense, I do like the two tall guys, English and Covington to perhaps man one DE spot. Like that height at DE. Hopefully, both can add quality weight. Highly doubt we'll see a JUCO guy start, normally those guys take some time to get settled in. I like Groves and McWilliams at the corners, just because both have some time in the program. I think there may be a question on if Ronnie Martin will return, he could be an answer at CB.

QB: Dylan Thompson/Brendan Nosovitch

FB: Connor McLaurin/

TE: Busta Anderson/Jerell Adams

WR: Shaq Roland/Shamier Jeffery

WR: Cooper / Nick Jones

WR: Damiere Byrd/Whiteside

DT: JT Surratt/Kelsey Griffin

DT: Gerald Dixon Jr/Abu Lamin

LB: Sharrod Golightly/Jordan Diggs

CB: Jamari Smith/Groves

SS: Brison Williams/Kadetrix Marcus

I think you mean Devin Washington.
Devante Covington never academically qualified.
And I think Thomas or Cedrick Cooper start at the other DE spot.

I also expect Lammons to contribute at corner, he may not make the 2 deep but he will be in there at some point.
