Default Going to Chicago in March- what should I do?

Never been before.

Going to see a friend who moved up there for work about 6 months ago.

The girl and I are going together, flying Southwest into Milwaukee then driving down. Roundtrip for the both of us was $700 to Chicago versus $450 to Milwaukee.

Will be there March 13-18, so obviously will be there for St. Patricks Day.

What should we see, what should we do, where should we make sure to eat?

Any hidden gems that only Chicagoans would know about?

Public transportation pretty good?

I used to be in Chicago every other month on business. Always had a good time. I still subscribe to Chicago Magazine. Try a steak at Burke's or one of these other places: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Ma...-steak-houses/. That link to the mag has many other things to do there listed.

Default Re: Going to Chicago in March- what should I do?

My impressions of Chicago from traveling there about 5 times a year since 2007:

- there has to be the highest concentration of hipsters in the world around Wrigleyville / Whicker Park / Milwaukee avenue I have ever seen. Everyone between the ages of 21-28 is in a band, does yoga, eats vegan, and rides a bike, and has skinny pants with one of those Chrome Industries man-bags and $1000 sunglasses. I know I get criticized for bringing the stereotypes and bullshit here but in this case it is JUSTIFIED. Stay away from the North Avenue / Wicker Park areas unless you want to be SUCKED INTO A HIPSTER VORTEX.

-Wrigley Field area is trashy and overrun with cheesy douchebag bars. BUT - embrace the suckage and have a good time! It won't make a difference when you're shitfaced. Buy a shitty Cubs tshirt.

- Don't go to Sox Park / south side unless you have a friend who knows the deal. Even though Robert Taylor homes are gone, it is a seriously shitty neighborhood, even shittier than the Wrigley area. At least there is Whole Foods hipsters in the Wrigleyville area - the area around Sox Park is seriously deranged. Put it this way - if you go to a White Sox game, you are allowed to brag about it after.

- Do not drive anywhere. Parking is a phenomenal bitch anywhere in the city.

- The loop is fun. I have stayed there on business a few times. Not sure if you like cigars but there's a killer cigar store down on the loop on Wabash someplace. There is also alot of stuff to see down Michigan Avenue and Grant Park.

- You will be walking ALOT - you will be in the best shape of your life after hanging in that city for a few days. Wear hiking shoes or North Face or something

- There is a bus that goes from the loop straight up Michigan Avenue which is cool. Someplace right there is the water tower which is cool.

- Rent a bicycle or ride one your buddy has, but wear a helmet. Chicago is the best city in the world for riding a mountain bike.

- You can buy all the cheesy souvenirs in the world you want, but here is a suggestion. There is a store called G & L Gifts which sells chicago fire and police memorabilia and shirts and stuff. It is in Oak Lawn at 4038 West 111 Street. It is the only reason you should get in a car the whole time you are there. My stepdad is a former cop and is from Chicago and I bought him some cool shit there for Christmas, they had this one shirt that had the Bears logo with Chicago PD which was neat. If you are looking for an interesting city-related souvenir I would check them out at : https://chicagofireandcopshop.com/ HIGHLY recommended for stuff you can't get at the tourist traps.

- The whole pizza thing is overrated. Someone on here from Chicago might be able to offer some pizza suggestions but I didn't see what all the fuss was about.

- I am going to tell you man, that city is a violent place so be careful, don't go to Hegewisch or anything south of Cermak. As bad as hipster areas are, at least you won't get ganked.

- My favorite neighborhoods are Near North and Old Town. I always go to Reckless Records (I'm a music fan) on Broadway. It is the only record store left in the United States

- UIC might have a baseball game while you're there. Northwestern might too.

- St patrick's day in wrigleyville = your friend will likely take you to some cool places. But as cool as it is, just remember this: your buddy probably pays more money in rent/mortgage in one month living in that part of town than you pay in 6 months. Being hip comes with a price tag and that city is pricey as shit.

- Despite that fact that I always come off like an ass, I happen to like chicago if you can do it safely.

One more thing, Andersonville area is sort of cool (your friend might think it is hipster-ish) but we went to this bar and had some MEAD. Mead is some sort of fermented wine that they used to drink in the Medieval times. That shit was potent. It was really unusual. I can't remember the name of the place but it was on Clark.

ALso my favorite bike shop is

There might be snow on the ground. You never know in March

Get a Chicago "go card". It will give you everything you need for about $100-$150. Entrance to museums, aquarium, subway/bus pass, etc. I highly recommend it. The gf and I went about a year and a half ago and it was wonderful for us.

I've been to Chicago several times and never felt threatened or in danger. Enjoyed every visit and would jump at the chance to go back. They should be dyeing the Chicago River green while you're there, I believe they do that the same day they have the St. Patrick's Day parade. Have fun!!

Get a Italian Beef Sandwich somewhere. So good. There;s a seafood restaurant called Bob Chin's that is the best seafood place in the country. They have crab flown in all the time from Alaska! Go up on the Sears tower. Go to a Bulls or Blackhawks game. My dad told me once his favorite restaurant ever was a place called the Erie St Cafe. It's pricey but worth going at least once.

Hope this helps.
