Default Spurrier Interviewed about Clowney

Includes Video

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap200...-college-coach

Quote:
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier gushed about Jadeveon Clowney's talent level on Wednesday. But Spurrier didn't gush about Clowney's work habits.

Spurrier said on NFL Network's "NFL AM" that Clowney's work habits were "pretty good" and "OK," saying they didn't compare to those of former Gamecocks stars Marcus Lattimore, Stephon Gilmore and Melvin Ingram. But each time Spurrier dinged the work habits, he also praised Clowney, saying "when the ball is snapped, yeah, he's got something no one else has" and "when the ball is snapped, he's got an explosion like you've never seen before."

I know someone at USC close to Clowney that said it was always a battle to get him to the weight room. However, when he starts getting paid I would expect he will certainly be a more motivated. In other words his best football is still ahead of him which is scary and I would expect him to be a great one when all is said and done.

When you are and have been a physically dominating player at EVERY LEVEL where you've ever played the game, it's hard to have the motivation to do the little things to take to "to the next level".

This is the issue with Clowney. When he finally makes it to the NFL, he won't have that luxury.

Basically that equates to. Clowney is a gamer. Some guys don't excel on the practice field because they get bored but in the game they dominate. That's Clowney.

The HBC won't sugarcoat it. Can you imagine how good Clowney would be if he gave the effort of the other guys Spurrier mentioned.

The national talking heads are already spinning this to say that Spurrier was bashing Clowneys work eithic.

Cowherd said he has a source close to our school saying that Clowney had to always be watched closely and he was immature and not a leader, etc.

Yea he could of been scary good! Like how much he improved from his freshman year to his Sophmore year. Another improvement like that to his JR year and he would of easily been the best player in the country.

It's similar to the Alshon situation IMO. Yea Alshon was great but Marshall and others with the Bears have said he was out of shape and didn't have a great training program when he came to school. He was too heavy in college. When he played last season he was 219 and 8% body fat. Imagine if he was in that kind of shape his Jr year.

To be fair, 95% of the SEC athletes do not give the effort of those three. Those guys were exceptional.

Yes they are. I should of said "training work ethic" not "training program". I don't put any of the blame on our S&C coaches for either Alshon or Clowney. I think both of them were just so talented and gifted they didn't have to work as hard. But Alshon found out he had to work just as hard in the weight room and the kitchen to succeed in the NFL.

I think Clowney will as well if he wants to be great

But how do you maintain muscle if you're not going to the weightroom?

Clowney would've been looking like a tub of lard by mid season

Spurrier being Spurrier...he's not going to lie or sugarcoat anything no matter what. Also, what's the breaking news here? Clowney is an incredibly gifted athlete who doesn't work as hard as some other players. Who knew?

Complex answer to your question but short answer is No he would not look like a tub of lard. Muscle does not turn into fat and vice versa.

I'm sure he lifted enough during te season to maintain his mass and strength

I wish he would not do stuff like that with former players, especially before the draft.

It is hard for any school to get players like the three he mentioned.

While I'm glad Spurrier always tells it like it is, I think this is the one situation where sugar coating it would have been a good call. We don't have the best track record keeping star players as ambassadors for the school and this kid could be one of the top players in the NFL in a couple years. I'd think we would stay away from saying anything even remotely negative about him as to not piss off the guy who could give us an insane amount of exposure throughout what is sure to be a very successful career.

Hopefully (and most likely) this one little comment won't have any impact, but I just don't see what Spurrier has to gain by questioning the work ethic of a star player who isn't on his team anymore.
