Put a bunch of screens around it kinda like that picture but then use HD projectors all around and project fans on them. Make it look like the place is packed in the upper levels.

Curtaining off CLA is a BAD IDEA ! Quite frankly I'm surprised at the comments attributed to Martin. Play the damn game boys and don't give me comments of a toddler. Not when I watch big time teams play on a damn aircraft carrier deck........

Before our team turned to crap the past few seasons I always sat in the upper deck. I've sat at the very top a few times when the stadium was packed with HORN as the coach. We had a huge turnout at the last women's game. Why in the world would we put curtains up. Horrible Idea.

I don't think it would really affect the atmosphere that much. I've been to a smaller conference tournament where they curtained off the upper deck for the championship game. The quarterfinals and semifinals weren't curtained off and the atmosphere didn't change much, if at all, for the finals. I would have expected the finals to be more intense with everyone in the lower deck and it being the finals, but it wasn't the case.

Regardless of that, my personal preference would be to not curtain it off. Some people might rather sit in the upper deck, so that's going to be taken away from them because some people get a bee in their bonnet? Also, count me in the group that thinks it looks tacky.

The fact that our coach is worrying about the size of the arena, instead of being glad that it could be an imposing venue for our opponents is a diversionary tactic. The arena is big, yes. But it's not too big. We just have a bad team.

Our arena is too big, but I don't see us moving out of it. Maybe if we changed the lighting scheme to dim the seating area and illuminate the court a little more.

And this might be the wrong place to do this, but our court graphics look like complete crap. Too busy, too big, and too much going on. We look bad in person and on t.v.

Instead of curtains, I say mirrors!

Make it like a fun house, Georgia will think we have 40,000 in the house when we only have 6.

The CLA is way too big. We play in the 17th biggest college basketball arena in the country:
First off, Coach Martin never said that the CLA was too big. Not sure where David Cloninger got that, especially if he was at the press conference. What Coach Martin said was that our current average attendance (which is projected to be the highest in six years) would fill most of the arenas in the SEC. He commented on how when we have six or seven thousand in the building it's embarrassing and he's right. He also stated that he believes attendance is on the rise and noted how the fans have started to show up for the women's games in historic numbers.

the fact is the arena was built for concerts not for basketball games... the angle of the seating near the floor, lighting, student section locations, and open feel to the whole place just dont do well for college basketball... i have been to a few games at NC State in the PNC arena and even when it was full it still had a similar feel because of the similar design...

I still think we should play in McGuire Coliseum, but that's never gonna happen so if hanging curtains and getting people to fill the bottom parts of the arena is what we have to do until we get some more fans in the arena, then I'm ok with it. That said, I do think it's ugly.
Who cares where the fans sit? It's NOT important.

yep...if they were building an arena for just basketball, then they wouldn't have made it so big, but they wanted this to be a multi-purpose arena, which it has been

Default Re: Curtaining off the upper decks at Colonial Lifeless Arena?
As far back as I can find Colonial Lifeless Arena attendance records, the highest % capacity we've had for a season was 73% capacity right around when we opened the new arena.

We had 61% capacity the year we made the NCAA Tournament in 2004. We averaged 7108 EMPTY SEATS every game in a year we made the Big Dance.

During the time period you cited, 2007-2011, we never averaged more than 68% capacity. And that was with vastly inflated attendance figures. Having attended every home game during that period, I can remember how laughable our inflated attendance numbers were.

Even with those vastly inflated numbers, we only "averaged" 8293 fans at last year's games, for 46% capacity.

We are currently "averaging" 52% capacity this season.

I write "average" in quotation marks because for the better part of the last decade we have been fudging attendance numbers by an absurd margin to make our numbers significantly higher. We actually have much less butts in the seats.

We have had a rare game here or there where the arena was decently full. These games, however, are few and far between.

Bottom line: we need to put curtains up. If we have a rare game where ticket sales are abnormally high, we can raise the curtains.
This. Agree 100%

I dont believe that, numbers would help with that arguement, a poster above said our attendance average was 61% capacity that year. Someones not right

We were rated 28th in attendance with 12045 on hand on average

Further in 2004 only 6 teams averaged more than 17000 fans per game in attendance.
