Players currently receive a rather paltry stipend. Is that stipend taxed? I don't think it is. Why would one assume any additional compensation would be taxed, then?

There are many implications but it is way to early to really mean anything. This vote gave 1 private university the right to organize. No bearing on public universities. Nothing saying they had to unionize. If they are employees do they have access to pension plans? Any union in place will side with the school because it can't afford to lose a piece of a dwindling pension
20% would be 8k. 25% would be 10k.

They've already been receiving compensation, it's just been capped by the NCAA at archaic levels.

And that compensation has never been taxed

So I guess there is a way around it.

Blame the NFL not the NCAA if getting a $40k a year free education isn't fair compensation nothing is. Most of college football players are too plain stupid they wouldn't be there unless they can play football they would be pumping gas instead.

20% of a total of 50k (40k scholarship and 10k cash/paycheck) would be 10k, taking the entire "paycheck" portion, putting them back in the same boat they are in now. at least thats what I think he was getting at

Assuming it would exceed a minimum threshold of income. Maybe it won't. Maybe laws will be rewritten. Maybe it won't go thorugh. Maybe pigs will fly.

Paragraph 2 of the following says it is stipends are taxable.

Would love to hear from a tax expert on this, as I def am not.

LOL, try saying that to IRS. Money exchange for services rendered is ALWAYS income according the IRS.

as jax mentioned, I am no tax expert either. Apparently you are. So maybe you could tell me how stipends for athletes are currently taxed.

Well, as of now stipends are not taxable income because they are a gift considered financial aid, but if they are the result of a negotiations to compensate employees "to get a piece of the pie" as opposed to being based on covering the costs of being a student athlete, that is likely to change.

see above. I don't consider myself a tax expert, but it was a subject I took in law school. Not my favorite subject mind you.

We will see.

Some of y'all seem awful scared about the demise of college football, and yet simultaneously so damn confident that there's is no way around Title IX.

Never underestimate the power of big business. And college football is a big ****in business.

Yeah, you got a point there. Where there is money, there is a way.

I read on one site that stipends and schollys are not taxable as the recipients are not employees.

Should be interesting to see how this all shakes out. There was too much money being made to think that unions and lawyers didn't want a piece of it.

Public Unions are illegal in South Carolina - so our players could never unionize, I imagine most SEC states are the same way.

public unions are not illegal in South Carolina. I was in one for years. Right to work does not equate to illegal

My understanding of this decision by the labor whatever was their compensation was what made them employees which is why they are they have the right to unionize. If it is employee compensation then it is income
