People are overstating the ruling. The ruling allows them to unionize, that is it. This will be a long battle to nowhere. You will never see college athletes effectively form a union that has negotiating powers. The NCAA does not have to recognize the union or negotiate with them.

Plus, there are downsides to being considered employees of a University versus being a student. You have a lot more personal standards and explicit job titles to uphold.

Unions did what was needed some 100 years ago with helping certain labor practices get changed, but over time they became corrupted and too powerful.

They have pretty much destroyed the American Airline industry and the automotive world in America and their memberships have steadily declined of late to where much of the power they once held has been greatly diminished. When the workers get too much power, it stunts or kills what gave them their jobs in the first place. They become too expensive and cumbersome to deal with and all their headaches. They, too killed or are still killing their golden gooses.

Players being unionized will mean other subtle things. It will be almost impossible to kick someone off the team, just as it is almost impossible to fire a unionized worker in most jobs. That will really cause havoc on your team when you can't get rid of a problem child, unless academics are too low to keep him eligible. You are going to have a faction created where many players will be more concerned with their own personal good than that of the team.

Oh, one other potential scenario which may someday come about is if one team does strike over whatever issue, will other teams across the nation also strike in a solidarity pose with the original striking team?

Whatever happens, it will not go smoothly, quickly, or steadily. All this would be funny, if it were not so sad and negatively impact so many.

Not good for CFB, I see a NFL minor league in the future.

Ask Hostess and GM how dealing with unions went for them? The powers held by unions have caused major problems in many large companies. For example a union with GM workers had negotiated that if a member of the union was laid off they would promise not to work somewhere else and in turn GM paid them full salary and benefits to sit at home and do nothing.

My understanding of unions is that if the players get enough "ballots" in favor of it, the NCAA will have no choice.

Another downside would be that they could begin considering their scholarship taxable income. At USC if an employee takes the classes they are allowed with free tuition it is considered income on their tax statement at the end of the year. Also, if they are employees and not student athletes wouldn't that mean they would have to utilize the retirement system and healthcare of that university? To me this would mean that the university could stop taking care of the medical expenses of athletes. Think of a guy like Lattimore that had two major injuries and how many thousands and thousands of dollars that could cost him as an employee and not a student athlete. I think there are way to many things to hold up and/or stop this process all together when they start looking at the negatives instead of just the positives these union cronies are showing them.

To me this whole thing sounds like they want to have their cake and eat it too. You can't have all the benefits of being a scholarship athlete along with an employee of the university.

Unions... A large contributing factor as to why there are so many auto manufacturers in the southern US. Kia, BMW, VW, etc.

I don't see this whole formation of a union thing doing much for them anyways. Are they not going to play sports if they don't get paid? I bet there are plenty of athletes out there that would jump at the chance to play college football.

Yes, unions have largely outgrown their usefulness in the workforce at-large, but back in the day they did a great deal of good to curb exploitation of workers.

Now we're likely to see a similar form of curbing of exploitation in college athletics. And then unions will outgrow their usefulness there, too, over time.

Okay y'all. They are unionized now? What are they going to do? Strike? I mean seriously now. This will be embarrassing for CFB players and they will all go on abou their business as usual. We want this. No. Well how about this? No. This? No. Oh yeah and the IRS says you have to pay taxes on your scholarships now. That is how this is going to play out. The players have no leverage.

Take away their scholarships and make them use the money they make to pay their way through school. I bet they would quickly change their tune then.

If this stands, it will mean drastic changes for college athletics and probably not for the better. Unions will ruin college athletics like they've ruined the auto industry in Detroit.

I received this legal update yesterday. Remember that NW is a private institution.

"I have nothing to report regarding SC union activity. However, I thought it was interesting that the NLRB’s Chicago Regional Office just issued a decision saying that the football players at Northwestern University could vote to form a union. Before you get to concerned here in the Palmetto state, remember public sector colleges and universities are not covered by the NLRA. Here is the article:http://msn.foxsports.com/college-football/story/federal-agency-gives-college-football-players-at-northwestern-university-right-unionize-032614

Ford is unionized, and didn't need any help. GM ran itself into the ground by having too many car brands(had to shut down Saturn, Hummer, and Pontiac). Lack of quality for a decade, and people switching to foreign vehicles that were more reliable. Nothing to do with a union more to do with a company product.

So if they are employees, will Universitites be able to fire them whenever they want for underperforming and go out and find a replacement? Will schools/conferences have salary caps as to try to create an even playing ground? This is just going to be a long drawn out process and I honestly believe it will go nowhere for a while. We won't see any big changes for years, but they are coming.

yeah this will be years before it makes much of an impact and can everyone (NCAA, news people, athletes themselves) quit pretending and saying this is a college athlete union... lets call it what it is college football and mens basketball players union ... it is just funny you always hear college athletes should be paid, college athletes arent getting the education they are supposed to be getting, college athletes are being mistreated by the school or whatever when really the majority of these issues are in direct relation to mens basketball and football.. (yes i realize none of the other sports make money etc) i just wish everyone would call it like it is
