Minors have to pay union dues if the company is unionized, ie Kroger.

My two cents, the athlete knows what they are getting into when they sign the scholarship papers. If you don't want to play by the rules, you have a choice to do something else.

Our coach has recommended paying athletes a stipend. The hypocrites at the NCAA stubbornly continued to hang on to the student-athlete as an ametur status when the reality is it's athlete-student. The people who are bringing in billions to the NCAA deserve a piece of the pie. By continuing to not accept this reality, the NCAA brought this on themselves. They could have taken this interim step SOS advocated and not had it go to the length it is now. For you chicken littles predicting the sky is falling, rest assured this decision will be appealed all the way to the Supreme Court and that could take years.

Well, one plus from this change is we will get to watch the college draft on TV in Feb. "With the first pick in the 2022 college draft, the University of Kentucky selects….". Agents will start making a lot more money as the pool of professional athletes expands. And just think of the additional opportunities to collect sports memorabilia. ATM's will be placed outside all college sports venues. Spring game day will be a great chance to buy that autograph of a lifetime! Maybe now, I will be able to buy a damn beer in the stadium!

Title IX will not be an issue since the NCAA will be replaced by the federal government; too much money to be made controlling college sports to allow the NCAA to remain. With them out of the way, unions can negotiate fair salary ranges for all sports. Each sport within the university will incorporate which will allow them to be considered separately from the other sports. Unfortunately, the lesser revenue producing sports will not be able to compensate their employees as well as the major revenue producers. Some bankruptcies will occur. Oh well, just the cost of doing business.

Draft in college wouldn't be that bad of an idea, it would stop BAMA from getting all the 5 star players, and good lordy USC might be able to get one 5 star player every other year.

I don't see this as a bad thing. The concept of Student Athlete is as archaic and antiquated as some of you are saying unions are. No other student at a university is like an athlete so why should we pretend to enforce rules that make the Athletes like other students. No other student has the additional commitments they have, no other students have the health risks they have, when is the last time a student had to report for press availability at the request of someone that doesn't have control of their academic progress. I never had my Dean tell me I had to be somewhere for 10 hours a week outside of class along with study hall, and community service. Students are never told you will miss over half the classes this semester to represent the university and elevate our brand but still be required to maintain acceptable GPA's.

Don't tell me the scholarship pays for this because even those who are on full academic scholarship don't have the level of requirements that athletes do and they don't have the health risks either. When is the last time you read a cover story about a Biochemistry Presidential scholar needing retinal replacement due to an injury sustained during studying. You don't.

These athletic students bring tons of money to the university. We all look at ticket sales and merchandising as revenue for the schools. Why do you think schools send out email about the accomplishment of any sport. Collegiate Hockey is not a revenue generator but when a university wins the NCAA championship, all of its alumni are notified. You know why, to increase donation to the school. Schools also benefit because the athletes raise the profile of the university when they are successful and drives up application and enrollment, which means more revenue. Ever heard the saying that "Athletics is the front porch of the University?" USC reported huge increases in its applicant numbers when the football program began to sustain success which is why schools invest in the programs. Businesses invest in things that will give a profitable return and every school knows that successful athletics program pay them huge returns. The athletes deserve to have their voices heard and to be considered in the process. Where this all leads I have no clue. I have no suggestions as to how to fairly compensate them. I just am tired of the false presumption of the STUDENT ATHLETE that has been long extinct since the schools, networks, merchandise companies, and everyone else has turned collegiate athletics into a cash cow that can be exploited many ways.

Hard to say where this will lead.

This only applies to private schools at this point. May it go further - I don;t know. I don't think it would have much impact in right to work states. (like most of the south).

What about non-revenue sports?

This may be the beginning of the end for the NCAA. Or it won't really matter.

this thread is all about players petitioning for the right to unionize.

As demonstrated by this ruling, only Northwestern players can unionize right now. If players at other school want to as well, they'd have to file to do so.

That implies that, if high school players wanted to unionize, then they would have to file, correct?

You all seem to forget, schools don't have to have to college sports. They LET these people play. They don't have a RIGHT to play at all. The student-athlete DOES exists, because the NCAA SAYS SO. The NCAA is the authority given by all member institutions. They have to the power to make any rules they see fit to support their MISSION of providing ACADEMIC opportunities to athletes. THE are NOT merely stubbornly holding to a notion of student-athlete. Student-Athletes is the NCAA'S MISSION. It is WHAT they exist for. If the guys want to bite hand that feeds them, they better be ready to get bitten back. When the NCAA comes down with a rule that says union members are ineligible to play they are going to look mighty dumb. It's not about what people think who is an amateur and or not. It's an amateur league because that is all the NCAA has the power to run. If you make this a professional league it can't be run by the NCAA. It is going to be run by some other association and it will be just some minor league football that has absolutley nothing to do the with the schools. College Football really would just be, Football. You can drop the college out of it.

I was just discussing this with my friend who is an athletic trainer at USC. I know they aren't part of the discussion since they mostly do "behind the scenes" work and aren't viable, but if the argument is time commitment they dedicate just as much time as athletes do. They have the same academic standards as team members and they do not receive the scholarships/benefits/per deim money the actual athletes receive. It adds another interesting side to the discussion, IMO.

For what it's worth, she thinks college football unions are "ridiculous" and is against the paying of athletes. (as am I, but I was wondering what the input would be on this topic)
