Wow, so amazing that an ordinary everyday word that we (hearing people) take for granted means to someone who has never heard it...imagine her hearing her children's voices and names the first time.

What's really odd is how the lady has an accent. Accents are learned by hearing them all the time, so how is she already has one? For the record, I'm not in any way suggesting something funny is happening with the story, just that I find the accent thing extremely interesting.

I think the lady with the accent is a doctor or speech pathologist. The other lady sounds like....well, for lack of a better phrase, she sounds like a deaf person talking.

I wasn't very clear in what I meant. If you listen carefully when the lady who is hearing for the first time is talking, you'll notice she has an accent as well. That's who I was talking about.

This kinda reminds me of the monkeys who were held in labs their entire lives and got to go outside for the first time ever. It was posted on here a year ago or so.

Simply amazing. You know good things happen to other people, and sometimes you either don't care or just aren't as happy for them as they are their self. This lady on the other hand, I am overwhelmed with joy for! Wow I have taken something for granted that some don't have.

My wife completely lost her hearing at 3 years old, although she has wore a cochlear implant since four. Many of you are right; people take the gift of hearing for granted. Imagine knowing sound, having already had the gift, and then it's gone. "Oh man, music." is one I hear people say often. Guess what? Oh man, everything!

We rely on our hearing more than we think, unfortunately. My wife has almost walked out in front of vehicles in parking lots more often than I've like, unable to process all the different noises at once and having a lapse of judgement.

I've came a long way in educating myself on her condition, and let me tell you, deafness impacts the loved ones almost as much at the one who is deaf. Our 2nd anniversary is in a week, and I still have a big problem with communication. Its frustrating for both of us for me to have to repeat myself a lot in public or if she has her processor off , but we're both getting more patient and considerate of one another.

As for the implant activations videos such as the op, That's a big moment for them. Not everyone is prepared mentally for the occasion. Some are excited, joyous and others feel scared and insecure because they don't know what to expect. I imagine it's quite a sensory overload.

I want to say since the first voice she heard was a lady with a British accent her brain wanted to mimic that because it thinks that is the way to speak. Kids do this as well, most people in the south have a southern accent, its a passed down accent from parents to kids. Now if a kid was born in the south, and moved to a place like New York. The kid would most likely sound like they have an accent from New York, depending on where they lived. Parents are a major influence, but the environment plays a huge part as well on how someone will speak. It's why a lot of parents don't want people cursing around their kids, their kids absorb those words like a sponge does water.

You are correct.

Also, let's not forget that just because she's been deaf her whole life, doesn't mean she hasn't been speaking all this time. She most likely went through extensive speech therapy in earlier years, and has spent her life studying lip and facial movement (lip reading) to "hone" her voice. My wife speaks with a noticable impediment, made more obvious by growing up in the south. She has a friend who embraced deaf culture and chose not to get implants, and she isn't from around here. While she also speaks with an impediment, it's obvious that she lacks the drawl.

I saw where a friend made a playlist of songs for her to hear with the first being Imagine by John Lennon, made me think what song I would pick for someone who was hearing for the first time.
