The day Carolina unionizes college football is the day I quit being a fan. The people pushing this are the going to be the first ones to bitch when the product implodes.

None the less...under the present model, only 23 programs made money in the athletic dept. Adding salaries of players, for example, would make it more difficult to operate in the black. Obviously, scaling back of facilities would be one area to look at. But, when you have 10 programs such as Texas, Florida, etc are able to keep setting the pace, other schools will not be able to. Those schools can absorb the extra costs.

In short, the Joneses keep on because they have 10-30 MM extra and the USC's fall behind because they don't.

I agree with that, but these guys are not the victims they are being made out to be. They actually have a great deal going, most of these guys will never sniff the NFL.

Fine, but do we have to pay squash players? And what happens to athletes’ student status if they’re also employees? Can they be fired? What if some teams vote to unionize and some teams don’t? And what about tax implications? What about Title IX?

I have no idea! One of the neat strategies you’ll see the NCAA’s defenders deploy in the wake of the Northwestern ruling is to start throwing out a million practical questions that have yet to be resolved, as though, if you can’t immediately answer all of them, they must be totally impossible to solve. “I don’t know what happens to their meal cards!” you’re supposed to cry in this situation, throwing your hands up to the heavens. “Therefore change is futile and I have no choice but to agree that the student-athlete system is the key to success in the classroom, on the field, and in life!”

But this is ludicrous. Reform of a big organization like the NCAA is inevitably going to involve a lot of tough questions. Maybe Ultimate Frisbee at Middlebury isn’t a job in the same way basketball at Kentucky is. Maybe some provision will be necessary to make sure women’s sports are treated fairly. But you know what? People build multinational corporations and reasonably functional democracies. People deal with trickier problems than college-sports revenue distribution all the time. Raising objections as though the mere existence of practical difficulties shuts down the conversation is the stalling tactic of an exhausted debater. It’s the move of someone with nothing left to defend.

pay them as employees and then let them pay their way through school...I understand their plight and have no problem with them wanting to have their interests represented. The NCAA has basically been a monopoly for amateur athletics and it is time that they realize that they can no longer dictate policy without some backlash. Schools certainly need the revenue from the major sports to help fund the non-revenue generating sports but why should it be on the backs of a few athletes? IMO, the biggest problems are those awarded full scholarships in sports that can not cover their own budget...maybe it is time some of them are cut?

Why shouldn't these athletes be given insurance that will last far past their eligibility? Why can't an athlete transfer without sitting out a year just like coaches can do? The playing field is uneven

Yes. The players are going to be really pissed when college football doesn't exist, or they get taxed on those free things they get now, or when they can no longer get a degree for free or play football. Don't forget not only do scholarship athletes have to be paid but all walk-ons will need to be paid. There are probably as many scholarship athletes as there are walk-on athletes in college.

This will only kill the golden goose, congrats.

I don't have a problem with it at all. Everyone has been exploiting these kids, and it's high time they got paid. At least it won't take 600,000 dead soldiers to end this form of slavery.

The ticket prices will simply go up a little bit, and people will continue to pack the stands.

You will still be a fan, especially if you're from South Carolina. It's simple tribalism, a form of religion, and if you've been an irrational fanatic, like the rest of us, then you'll continue to love the team.

Don't forget which coach started this "paying players" dialogue.

You mean those standards that are steadily becoming less filled each year??? Keep dreaming that this won't destroy many athletic offices and cause the canceling or demphasis of football programs. As usual you live in a dream world and not reality. For someone all about anarchy, seems like you should be against the forced recognition of labor unions.

Spurrier talked about paying them a small stipend, he didn't say a thing about unions being involved in college football. He has recently said that he doesn't want to see NCAA football unionized. The modern day union in the United States is corrupt and ruins everything it puts it's hands on. I work for a unionized company and I am not a member because it is full of lazy ass people who sit back and collect a check and don't do shit to earn it. Unions are dying in this country because they are corrupt as hell.

Sadly, it seems more of the people who live here anymore are the same as the ones you describe as your co-workers.

Yeah, some of my co-workers are definitely lazy, but the union reps are really the people that I am talking about. It is truly unbelievable that they get paid at all to do the job they are doing. It is laughable to me when I hear how about the integrity of the current unions. I am utterly unimpressed with my experience with our union over the last 11 years.

I see the "union" as a means to get the NCAA and universities to finally listen to the athletes...let's face it, none of their complaints are new but they have been ignored long enough

This guy gets it. This reminds me of the Coal miners back in the 1800's.

Also a Union isn't bad, what is bad is the people who run it. Get rid of them, and a Union that tries to not only benefit the workers, but the company as well is a very great thing. Also they wouldn't be needed if every company ran a straight ship.
