Exactly why we need to be cautious about proclaiming a particular coach inept. We just don't know what goes on behind the scenes, where his performance may be outstanding.

The ST seem to be moribund. This is just an ongoing problem, year after year. Not horrible, but also not average by SEC standards. We just are not getting better under any changing of the ST coaching staff. Maybe SOS figures he has already tried changing ST coaches every other year and he wants to see if a steady hand at the helm will work.

Our talent level conference wide is about middle of the road, at least considering the recruiting stars. Personally, I think our S&C and coaching staff
do a pretty good job of coaching up what we get.

Because of the length of time South Carolina has consistently fielded below average STs, makes me think maybe the problem with ST performance could be an issue other than coaching. It could be coaching, yeah, but maybe not.

That argument doesn't really seem to make sense when you consider that there are teams we have consistently out-recruited for years that are outperforming us in this area. This isn't just Alabama and Auburn beating us in Special Teams rankings, its almost the entire conference. If you wanted to say its due to average stars, which is a whole other discussion of actual talent evaluation, then at least middle of the conference should be expected, not almost last in several key categories.

We have taken some guys for kicking duties especially, on scholarships, that have just not panned out. There is no nice way to say that, they are probably good people, but they never saw the field in any meaningful sense as far as playing.

The punting statistics can largely be blamed on the kicker. Kickoff returns, which is just about average, and kickoff coverage, which is below average, are team statistics. Therefore, assuming we offered the wrong people, it doesn't explain the broader problem.

There is also luck involved. Maybe we just are going through a string of bad luck.

My bet is that the problem is caused by the lack of time devoted to ST in practice. That would explain why none of the ST coaches show much improvement. It also suggests we have a structural problem in our practice, which means it is an area the HBC needs to address and for which he is responsible.

The same thing happened in the bowl game, but Whitehurst could not make the tackle against the Wisconsin return man.

I look at this a bit differently.. This tells me that Coach Spurrier is going to use the new Summer rules that allow coaches to spend time with players. Meaning that he is going to be spending a ton of time with the QBs.

No one has said we should throw to the TE every play.

Several people have pointed out that our offense by design doesn't utilize the TE, but IMO (and the opinion of others) we could (and should) utilize them a bit more than we do.

If all we have is Andy Boyd-type blockers playing TE, then it makes sense not to use them as a weapon, but when you have athletic playmakers like we have, then they're another bullet to use.

And using them frequently gives Defensive Coordinators something else to gameplan for.

Nope. The reassigning of the tight ends to him is for two reasons: it gives Mangus a bump in title so he can get more money and it puts Coach Robinson on notice.

But also if Coach Mangus has to coach the Tight Ends (not just on the field remember) then the slack has to be picked up by none other than the HBC; whom should be giddy with all those pocket passers he has now .. Unless Seth Strickland (is he still a GA?) is moving up.

How much do you see Mangus still being involved with the QBs?

Not to say it's not going to happen, but... I have a hard time visualizing Spurrier spending a bunch of his personal time with the QB's... just doesn't seem 2014 Spurrier-like.

I hope he does though.

I would have a hard time believing it too but the rules are changing this Summer. The NCAA is allowing coaches to work with players over the Summer where it used to be NO contact.

With Coach Mangus picking up another position group, it only makes sense for Spurrier to be more hands on with his signal callers. SOMEONE has to coach them up when Coach Mangus is working with the Tight Ends right? I don't see how he could coach those guys AND the QBs but I guess its not impossible.
