Seems appropriate to insert this NYT article / video "Manning or Leaf? A Lesson in Intangibles" here, especially given the heated discussion on whether the Texans and other early pick teams should take a QB with their first-round selections.

So, with the 2014 pro football draft upon us this week, does it boil down to a matter of character?

[...]

Character is an issue in all sports and, for that matter, in other endeavors. Perhaps it weighs more heavily in football because an unusually large number of players, 11, must meld into a single unit. Cliché though this may be, the team is a chain that is often only as strong as its weakest link.

On a personal level he has few redeeming qualities, but as a QB his ability to put the ball right where it needs to be can be pretty amazing. That said, my projection for him as a pro is that he'll get hurt really early in his career, and the lack of mobility that will follow will mean he'll be out of the league in about 3-4 years. I wouldn't touch that guy before about round 4.

If the texans take Clowney first, then about the third round Erin Murray will be begging them to take him. And to be honest, that might not be a bad pick. They should at least make the play-offs every year even if they don't go any further. (Kind of like Matt Ryan and the Falcons).

When you make predictions on the draft, you open yourself up to criticism. But, that never stopped me before. I get the feeling the Jags will swap with HOU to go up and get Clowney. Here is why:

1. Desperate need for QB and an elite pass rusher. No QB here
2. Cost would not be that high to go from 3-1.
3. He fits perfectly in to Gus Bradley (formerly of SEA def) Leo role (pass rusher)in his 4-3 defense. Bradley would be the perfect coach for Clowney.
4. GM Caldwell has talked all week about moving down, not up. He is doing the opposite. He was the Asst. GM in ATL that got Jones. Not afraid to go get a player.
5. HOU could drop to 3 and still get the #1 player on their board. If they go beyond 3, they almost certainly would not

So I could be completely wrong and hopefully no one will remember, but if I'm right I will be on CT at 8:20 on Thursday bragging like a mofo. Ha.

So what does Houston get for dropping to 3? That's going to cost something...and how do you know JD isn't Houston's #1?

You are correct, my assumption is that HOU is not totally sold on Clowney. If they are, they will take him for sure. They would have to be willing to fall to 3 for a 3rd or 4th round pick. They could still have Clowney as #1 but a grade not much higher than the second player on their board. They could use the extra pick they get from the Jags to get back into the late 1st to get their QB, or simply take him at 3 and have an additional pick in a later round.

Nice theory, but since the Jags and Texans have to play each other 2x a year, I'm not sure you let you division rival get the #1 star of the draft.

While he failed he didn't test positive for anything. Diluted sample. His physical therapist and doctors produced documentation that he was drinking a minimum of a gallon of water a day to combat dehydration. Over hydrating

But it should be that they are not totally sold on the 1st rd QBs in the draft. They picked up a QB via free agency...and they could one day kick themselves for not snagging Johnny FB if he becomes a star. Lots of uncertainties in this draft....

I think Houston is absolutely sold on Clowney.

I just don't think they are sold on whether or not he will help them out more than trading down and getting an extra pick to use on a QB later. McNair even said that Clowney was the most talented player in the draft.
