Getting the right players in this program made a huge difference...the players that truly believed we could win all the time, even against Clemson. They had the mentality and of course their athletic ability to win the game and other huge games.

We are continuing to get those players. It's truly wonderful to see.

ATTITUDE!!!

1. Finally not focusing only on that game and focusing on the bigger objective of winning the east and the sec

2. Simple game plan of quick 3 and outs, win the turnover margin and long sustained offensive drives, I think Clemson comes into the game trying to outwit SOS and overcomplicates the game for themselves… case and point their first drive this season with the trick play

3. Mentality… I think it drives their fans crazy that they are no longer our teams biggest game of the year… our sec games mean so much more now that we are competing for the SEC east that the team knows how to prepare, play and knows what it takes to win big games on a big stage… wanting to win and knowing what it takes to win are two completely different things

I know 1 and 3 are similar but I think I was trying to separate that our goals are different then what they use to be i.e. signs with BEAT CLEMSON and the mentality of “win anyway”/”battle” that our team has and as of late Clemson seems to lack

good off-season thread. Easy answer - coaching and talent. Clempson's been good but Carolina's a full notch or so better nowadays.

I asked Spurrier this question during a golf outing 2 years ago (streak was only 3 then). He said the big difference is the level of depth and talent we have now. When he first got here, we would be missing or playing a lot of injured players by the time we finished the SEC and the Clempson game rolled around. We just didn't have enough players. We have so much depth now (talented depth) that we have plenty of players to finish the season. So when a Connor Shaw doesn't play in 2012, Dylan Thomas wins the game. FWIW, that was his take on it. Plus he thought successfully competing in the SEC gives a bit of a mental edge. Again that success is due to having a two deep talent pool to play with.

We started recruiting better players and SOS got us focused more on winning the SEC than beating Clemson.

Example A: Their count-down clock. Where's their head at?

Two simple things:

1. Line play on both sides of the ball for us was better.

2. The baseball team winning the NC and beating Clemson all the time changed the fan's mentality. (not sure that makes a difference to the players, but it helps the mood in the stadium.)

Difference.
Coaching, player development and evaluation.

It is clear our coaches, down to our assistants, are coaching circles around Clemson's staff. They may have better recruiters than us, but that leads to development.

Our players get better year to year...Clemson's players, while good, don't progress...their coaches get by with having superior talent to most teams they play. Look at Martavis Bryant...when he got to Clemson he was good at running curls and flys...when he left, he was good at running curls and gos...nothing else. He didn't improve his route running, and didn't really add to his game.

Boys was the same way...he has a set number of passes and reads he was good at...never improved his arm strength and never got past throwing curls, gos and screens.

Finally...evaluation...Clemson puts stock into stars...Carolina has gotten good at idetifying under the radar guys...signing 2 and 3 star guys and getting 4 to 5 star effort out of them...Munnerlyn (2 stars), Swearinger (3 stars) are just a small sample.

So that is it...coaching...it really boils down to coaching...Clemson may have one of the highest paid staffs in the country, but they are not getting a good return on their investment compared to what Carolina is getting.

Bingo. Also henmania made a good point about successfully competing in the sec. Once we started competing for the east, I think our players felt that sense of pride and started expecting to win those out of conference games. Not to say they don't respect those teams. And Legal that shit was hilarious

You've got it. We started winning in the SEC and recruiting better players. We didn't recruit better across the board to start out with, but as time wore on we started to get great starters across the board, then great depth. I seem to remember injuries being an issue with previous games. When you have quality depth that not only helps you if a player gets injured, it also helps you since you don't have to rely so much on your starter you can sub him out. It takes a long time to consistantly recruit great players across the board and get a stacked roster.

Also, I think not having an SEC game prior to the Clemson game was a help. We also had that as our open date and the team looked rusty if I recall. I think having a nonconference non BCS opponent is the way to go. Builds confidence across the board, gets some guys reps but keeps them game ready.

Intangible is Spurrier. He's assembled a great coaching staff. Not only that, the guy hates losing. I'm sure the clemson players celebrating when Dabo won his first and only game as hc stuck in his craw...didn't they carry him off the field or at least put him up on their shoulders or something? I believe it was a home game too. Spurrier is an ornry old cuss, but darn it, he's USC's ornry old cuss. The determination that he seems to have in beating cu (intentionally lower-case) is matched by the perverse joy he gets in ribbing them I figure. SOS is one heck of an intangible!

Spurrier immediately put a priority on improving the Gamecocks in the trenches so that we could compete in the SEC. That immediately gave us an edge over the finnesse team Tommy built and Dabo has continued.

I also think there are 2 moments along the way that were huge in putting us on top in the rivalry. They changed the attitude of the rivalry. Clemson was in cruise control in the CWS. Ray trotted out a bullpen pitcher who had only been used as a left handed specialist. Leggett had to have been licking his chops. The rest is history and Michael Roth is a legend in the rivalry and forever a part of the fabric of the CWS.

I also think 2011 when Bruce won twice in 8 days. Clemson came into the football game ranked in the top 10. The basketball team that hadn't beaten them in Littlejohn in nearly 10 years had losses to Elon and Tenn St.

Spurrier puts a priority on recruiting kids that have been a part of winning programs.

I am also fairly certain Dabo said something stupid after the 2008 game Spurrier is still making him pay for.

I agree with all said and this post. Spurrier talks about the goal of winning the east, and the SEC in that order....then he puts the little mind f*ck kicker on to mess with dabo "oh, and winning the state championship is important too"....like it is now more of an after thought. Used to be our entire mindset was just to beat clemson...our goals are much higher now.

Hahaha!

For me, three things stick out.

Spurrier, Spurrier, Spurrier.

Playing the SEC is a grind. Week in and week out we play big games. Even the lesser teams this year in the SEC are tough (see Tennessee) and we don't get to play Wake Forest and UVA.

Lastly, I just don't really care that much about Clemson any longer. Fifteen years ago it was the game I focused on the most. Now, it doesn't matter if we lose to them. I don't care what their fans think and we could still lose to Clemson and play for the NC. Clemson can't lose to us as good as we've gotten and still play for the NC.

We have had some big recruiting classes the last few years. It's not only the stars in some of these classes, it's the quality and work ethic of almost every player who signed.

QB development has been a huge part of the last few years, coming off Garcia. Hopefully we can lock up GA Mangus for quite a while.

Shawn Elliott and our focus on OL recruiting each cycle has also been one of our biggest keys. We have reloaded at every position on the OL the past through years through recruiting quality depth. I can't remember the last time we depended on a freshman or JUCO for fill a hole on the OL in a while.

We stopped making excuses for losing. "Win Anyway!!!"

Most of the kids we recruit come from winning programs and are aware of what it takes to do so.

We finally developed a SEC winning mentality, and I thank Ray Tanner's efforts with the baseball program for that one. You can see it in Women's basketball now.
