Seems pretty basic to me. The defensive front seven we brought in '08 and the DB's from '09, some key offensive talent and coaching changes over the same 2 years brought a shift from a bad 7 win team from the earlier Spurrier years to a good one that finished stronger than it started, that's what we've done since. We won the players over Clemson in '09, and have them more battle tested from our harder schedule then their players are. This isn't about focusing more on Clemson, this is about what Spurrier knew he needed to do when he came in, get better period and let the wins follow. Now there seems like their should've been more parity going into last year's contest with Clemson's DL finally getting to where it seemed like the can hold their own in the trenches but we're deep and had options to go to when traditional kinds of runs didn't work. Spurrier may like sounding off on our dominance, but this is about winning the players we want in state and competing at a high level in the SEC.

X factor was SOS putting emphasis on the SEC and winning a championship. Making high school players believe that they can be the first to come here and win a championship is a big selling point. Oh and couple guys by the name of Clowney and Lattimore.

One major factor with our mentality is definitely Dabo's rant. All Carolina fans and players, even the new guys, get pissed off when they talk about that.

This was one of the big factors our fans used a few years ago when we
were tying to figure out why we couldn't win or put two games back to
back against Clemson. A large group of people during the discussion said
that it was BECAUSE we were in the SEC that we entered the Clemson
game "beat up" and we couldn't match them in endurance.

I posted some stats on the board that I even found very interesting in
2010 (when we were trying to win our second game with them)...we
had been in the SEC for 19 years at that time. I took the record vs
Clemson since we joined the SEC then went back to the 19 years prior
to joining the SEC and it was amazing... the results were almost Identical.
In fact, with the tie in 1988 (our last tie with them), we were actually
1/2 game better vs Clemson since we joined the SEC. Both records though
were very similar and very much in Clemson's favor.

IMO, if it was just us being in the SEC, it would have paid off a few years
back, definitely under Holtz's teams when we were getting better talent
and winning more games in the SEC than we had any year prior. I think
it has more to do than just being in the SEC and playing an SEC Schedule.

Coaching, development of talent and conditioning are all factors. I think the most important is the upgrade in recruiting. Pat Summitt was told by her father "you don't win the Kentucky Derby with mules".

I also think there are 2 moments along the way that were huge in putting us on top in the rivalry. They changed the attitude of the rivalry. Clemson was in cruise control in the CWS. Ray trotted out a bullpen pitcher who had only been used as a left handed specialist. Leggett had to have been licking his chops. The rest is history and Michael Roth is a legend in the rivalry and forever a part of the fabric of the CWS.

I also think 2011 when Bruce won twice in 8 days. Clemson came into the football game ranked in the top 10. The basketball team that hadn't beaten them in Littlejohn in nearly 10 years had losses to Elon and Tenn St.

Spurrier puts a priority on recruiting kids that have been a part of winning programs.

I am also fairly certain Dabo said something stupid after the 2008 game Spurrier is still making him pay for.
Not sure I'd agree with this.
If you remember when Spurrier took over the program he was on a short
recruiting cycle. Only had 3 months to recruit and put a staff together.
He brought in John Hunt who had been with him at Florida for a couple
of years......Hunt was hired when John Latina left after a week, to join
Charlie Wiess at Notre Dame. Hunt convinced Spurrier that he had enough
bodies on the roster to put together a good O/Line so Spurrier ended up
not recruiting an O/Lineman that first year, and tried to get some speed
in the lineup at the skill positions.
In the three years that followed we suffered GREATLY because of that
first year of getting no O/Linemen, and poor evaluation by Hunt the
next couple of years that followed had us struggling on the O/Line for
several years. .... Our line was well below average Spurriers first 4-5
years here, and still wasn't top quality O/Line for this conference until
just a year or so ago

It all changed when: Spiller ran the opening kickoff back for a TD in the 2009 game, in Columbia, and it was called back for holding or a block in the back.

We got a 2nd chance and we've never looked back.

Why? In a nutshell: October 1, 2006

"I don't know if any coach has told our fans, 'Please donít clap if we get beat.' "

"It was a game that was there to be won, and we didn't do it," he said. "We walked off the field losers."

"Spurrier is accustomed to winning such games. South Carolina fans are not. The Gamecocks have lost 20 in a row to opponents ranked in the top five."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/01/sp...ted=print&_r=0

As captured by the above New York Times article, Clemson didn't change, we did. And it certainly didn't happen by accident or overnight. Thanks Coach!!!

Prior to 2009 I think we were less successful in landing the best in-state talent. They were either going to the taters or out of state. I think that changed with Gilmore, Holloman, etc. and continued with Latimore and Clowney. Plus it just happened to be a really good time for SC high School football.

2009:
Opening kickoff we smear Spiller but have to rekick because we're off sides. Spiller runs the rekick back for a TD.

We take the ensuing kickoff and drive inside the Clemson 35. Clemson drops an interception and we recover our own fumble. Maybe our luck has changed? Nope. Garcia throws a pick on 3rd down.

Clemson marches into our territory and thanks to a cheap personal foul has a 1st down inside our 25. Next play we force & recover a fumble and advance it to near the 40-50.

Enter Stephon Gilmore in the wildcat. He ran the ball 4-5 times. Then came the step toward the line before he dropped back and completed the pass to Alshon inside the 10. We tie the game a couple plays later.

Clemson starts moving the ball again but we get the pick inside our 30 and return it inside Clemson's 20. Before the end of the quarter we're up 14-7.

IMO that quarter was where Carolina said "Enough! We're better than Clemson and we're not taking this crap from them any more. We will not lose to Clemson." The 2009 game was decided by halftime and in the 4th qtr we were just running the same play up the middle and Clemson couldn't stop it.

Seems like the Gamecocks are more aggressive than the Tigers.

The Gamecocks make less turnovers.

Of course, scheduling a bye or a weak team before the Clemson game helps (it seems)
