I love Marcus Lattimore, but I've gotta be honest: there's an uncomfortable and absurd level of hero-worship for him that I've never seen with any other Gamecock.

If we get into the business of building statues, the criteria should be either 1) Heisman Trophy or 2) National Championship winning coach. That's it. I love the guy, but Marcus does not fit the criteria.

If there was ever a certain type of player that you would want to build a statue of it would be Marcus Lattimore (ftr I don't necessarily share all of his beliefs and I am not talking about his religious views). I don't know that anybody has encompassed what being a teammate, leader and winner has more than him. Due to the extreme highs and lows of his short, starstruck career at USC he is certainly in a category of his own. I don't know that you can quantify the contributions he made while he was here. There were times he carried those teams and was instrumental in winning the first SECE title. And without that success do we continue on the pace we are now? If we win a NC under Spurrier I wouldn't mind seeing a statue like this put up honestly

If it weren't for multiple players wearing the number 21, (like Holloman or Roberts). I could've seen it being retired. Can't see a statue though.

I agree that the statue is a little much, but I think with Marcus being such an amazing teammate and leader, we could do something where the player who embodies that the most wears #21. (Obviously it'd be a skill player not a lineman) I've seen teams honor guys like that.

marcus was a good guy and all and was in that first group to take us to the next level. he was the first guy that taught us to work. the upperclassmen followed him from day one. he deserves mucho respect and gratitude. what he doesn't deserve is a statue.

as has been said in this thread, he didn't ever finish a season. and barely eeked out 2 seasons of games...he would probably be embarrassed to have a statue for that effort.

Maybe a Marcus Award to the player that shows the most Marcus qualities.

It's not just us, it's other teams as well. See Tenn/USC game 2012. Marcus is not your average person or player. He is well beyond what most athletes are that achieves such feats as stats or what have you.

Statues are so passť, especially athletic ones.

Let other schools crank them out, if they choose.

Don't copy them.

Let them live on record books and memories and videos and newspaper articles.

I just don't understand erecting a statue based off that. Makes no sense.

Marcus was the kind of player you wish you had a whole roster full of.
110% effort, and 110% Gamecock. He was a great player, and he was
probably the best team LEADER we've had on this program EVER, but erecting
a statue of him ?!?!?!?!

Neither his time nor his numbers dictate putting up a statue of him and to
be brutally honest, I wasn't on board with the fanfare we showed him
statewide before he left for the draft. In the big picture, Marcus (had
he stayed healthy) MIGHT have ended up as our second best
RB in school history. Fact is Marcus played one full season and parts of
two more and in games where he WAS healthy, had below average
numbers. In his short career, he did not put up the numbers that would
justify a statue being put up on the grounds anywhere.

I am not "Anti-Lattimore". I loved it when Marcus was on his game and
the way he dominated the game when he was ON. I love it that he
choose to come to USC and play football, and am deeply saddened that
his career was cut short with devastating injuries. .. I am REALLY hoping
that he can play at 100% as a pro, and stay healthy with a long and
exciting career, because I know he will represent the school and his
life well in doing so. ...... But he did nothing to warrant a statue of him
as a Gamecock, being erected at USC.

He was one of the group of young men that started this program on the
path to where it is right now, but even at that, there was a class before
him with a couple of players that ACTUALLY got that ball in motion. He
deserves every accolade he's been given as a player and a leader YES,
but if there is not a statue of George Rogers or Sterling Sharpe on the
grounds anywhere, then there should definitely not be a statue of
Marcus Lattimore. ...... One of the main reasons is that you are sending
the message to a lot of other players (former and current) that WAY
TOO MUCH favoritism was shown to a single player without the stats
to back up such an honor as a living memorial.

A statue of Marcus Lattimore is NOT a good idea

i do agree with not wanting to let his misfortune with injuries or him being a great guy lead an over the top honor that isnt necessary and like you said would be kinda unfair to guys who put up better numbers.

now his stats likely will make him eligible to have his jersey (not number) retired after the 2017 season. he's the school td leader, and if he holds onto that mark til after that 2017 season i think its a no brainer to retire his jersey. it would be a suitable honor and well earned.

Spurticus, I agree. I really like the way you write. How about this question (sorry to change subject), I think Brandon Wilds is better than Mike Davis, and this year Brandon will do what he did his first year. What do you think.
