I can't speak for Marine Corps chow halls, but the ones at Ft. Knox were a little different. We shared a chow hall with regular active duty soldiers, so all of the desserts and other goodies were there. And being that it was during the early days of the PC era, the drill sergeants made it clear to us that we could eat whatever we wanted.

The flip side of that coin was that the drill sergeants had an obligation to ensure that all of the privates under their tutelage maintained a fit physique. So should we choose to partake in a doughnut or a cookie, we may be required to burn off those extra calories.

One fellow private decided to ignore the message between the lines and test the waters a bit. He went through the chow line, and grabbed a slice of cake before sitting down. The senior drill sergeant sat down right across from this private, and observed. Once the private was through eating, he began to stand up, leaving the cake untouched. The drill sergeant quickly explained to the private that food was not to be wasted in the Army. So the private sat back down and began eating his cake. While chewing, the drill sergeant reiterated the calorie burning obligation. He said, "Now I estimate that one push-up burns about 2 calories, and that cake looks like it contains about 1000 calories."

That poor young man did push-ups all day the nest day in between instructional blocks.

I'm willing to bet he doesn't like cake anymore.
