Did he wake up this morning and realize VT was actually in state? Funny that it was us and UT, then all of a sudden he's staying in state.

It appears it was UT or stay home for him. I don't think he really had any intentions of coming this far South. He had a great time during his visit but things do wear off over time. I think the writing started to show when he visited UT for a second time and then the "surprise" visit to VaTech.

Who knows though, maybe he is just creating a bunch of drama.

First I am not a Deke hater, nor fan. He is still a maybe for me with time, tho limited, to demonstrate fan-lyness results (?) I have no more idea where this kid chooses than most of you.

It seems we less often win a kid based on superior recruiting skills such as relationship with HC or position coach. That seems to be the reason so many posters revert to the "if we can get him in for a visit then". It seems then we are able to demonstrate our strenths, player development, the overall program etc. and none of that is a bad thing.

Recruiting per say has never been considered SS's strenth nor a comparitive emphasis to other aspects of his job and it ddddoesn't surprise anyone that staff members to a great degree mimic his emphasis as one would expect.

BUT it seems during most of his tenure at SC he has at least one established ringer who was compared to the best nationally by objective minds and recognized accordingly as well as usually at least one up and comer on staff. We haven't had either since the RC left to join his father and later the RB coach left for UT. GM may get there??

I'm far from sold on Fedora. I hope like hell we can do better than that when SOS hangs it up. There are several on the current staff I'd take any day before Larry Fedora. To each his own but that hire wouldn't excite me one bit.

He had decent talent this year & parlayed that into a 7-6 year with a loss to Duke, & giving up 55 to ECU.

We've got some excellent recruiters on this staff. The weakness is the large disparity between the ones at the top (Whammy, Elliott, Mangus) & the ones at the bottom. Everybody needs to carry their share of the water, some of these guys need to pick it up.

I don't follow recruiting religiously, but I follow it fairly closely and I would say Lorenzo Ward does a pretty good job recruiting the Georgia kids. He's pulled in some really good talent out of the Atlanta area and many of them mention their relationship with Ward as a big factor for why they chose USC.

That is correct & were he to leave this staff it would likely become real apparent, real fast, how critical he is to this program.

He will at some point. Every year he has an excellent defense puts him closer to a head coaching job.

Something interesting about him though, does he limit himself to the southeast when he does consider another job? To leverage his recruiting connections, particularly in Georgia?

And would he only consider BCS type jobs, or would he take something like Northern Arkansas, a la Malzahn?

That makes me think of the Chad honestly. I'm not in his shoes, and I don't know if he is the kind of guy that flubs interviews. But you can stay on as a coordinator too long if your goal is a head job. Bud Foster is exhibit A for that, if he ever really did want a head job.

At some point you have to take something, even if it isn't your dream.

I think he's meaning Recruiting Coordinator, not Ron Cooper....he was referring to Shane Beamer - who was USC's Recruiting Coordinator - returning to join his father Frank at VT....

Not saying Ward isn't good and isn't the best, or one of, amoungst our staff. Every staff has some who are better than the rest and as some state he would be missed were he to leave.

said, or meant to, so far as I am aware we don't have anyone who is recognized by objective minds as currently elite or young and likely to be (elite). and in some past SS staffs we have had one or both.

Given SS emphasis and comparitive strenths lie elsewhere it seemed having said on staff helped to round out the staff overall and clearly showed in recruiting those 07-11 classes on which our resent success was based.

remember the quality of those classes and then take into account our staff at that time had neither on field success nor upgraded facilities nor a long term committment from SS to remain with which to sell our program while facing Tn, GA and Fl programs at thier zenith. pretty darn remarkable IMHO.

seems our total overall program gains in the hands of such recruiters as SB in combination with the other tools at our current staffs disposal might birth applicable, even extrodinary results.

I know some will say we must go with who we have, which is true. But the reason those individuals are not on staff is because staff turnover is a given. Change isn't if but when. The ? I present is a belief our overall program will benifitt should being a national level recruiting "ringer" so to speak be primary requirment in his ( next guy) tool set (good special teams coach a nice 2nd).
Maybe you agree maybe not.

There have been some questions on where Slayton, with elite speed would best fit in on the next level. Those questions were answered before lunch on Thursday when the 6-foot-2 speedster was too much for defending 6A champion Norcross to deal with. Slayton made play after play and nothing really stopped him all day until he got tired later in the day. Playing both ways in the heat was tough in the all day event, but there was not anybody there that could cover him consistently. Speed kills has never been more relevant to a daily performance.
