we don't have the DE to play 4-2 up front all the time.....that's why we'll add a LB and drop a DE in the 3-4

I disagree, if he can't set the edge, we'll get run over. I don't think he's strong enough to play every down.....but clearly he'll be very good in passing situations.

There have been plenty of guys that played in the 240's in this league so that's not a serious issue for a pass rushing end, BUT if he is in the 240's but doesn't have the strength to take on tackles in the run game then he's only good for passing situations.

He was 240 in the spring though. I believe he said that in one of the interviews. So hopefully he'll be 248-250 by the time fall camp starts and hopefully he'll have added enough strength to be able to take on tackles in the run game as well.

I have always had really high hope for him. I want to see him have a breakout year. I'll be watching for #5 on the field all year.

Just to throw this out there. Has anybody thought of the idea of throwing 3 DT's out there on a 4 man front? Just put a 3rd one at the LE spot to go with the other 2 and have the normal pass rushing RE on the field too.

I realize that it would be a every 1st down thing or even more than 5-6 times a game but unless i'm mistaken we have some really good depth at DT this year and some of those guys need to get on the field.

We've talked about lacking depth and size at DE and since we are going to run some 3-4 this year anyway, and you need 3 big, strong linemen for the 3-4 scheme so why not play with it a little bit.

Our defensive personnel in any given game could be really confusing for offensive coordinators this year.

I agree our defense should be VERY good this year and unpredictable.

I think English ranks pretty high in the strength category, but lacks weight for some assignments. Getting off blocks and covering assignments are a big deal. If you watched Devin Taylor his senior year, you saw a clinic on assignment football, block shedding, and making tackles - and he could rush the passer (still can). He probably played at around 265 as a senior.

265 in a 4 man front is about the size you're looking for in college.

I believe Sutton was 260 last year as well and he just didn't make many plays because he couldn't get off blocks. DT was very well coached and he worked very hard. He's part of the reason Clowney had so many sacks his sophomore year.

English has improved his strength if you watch the workout video from this year, at the end it lists top guys and English was top 3 on the team in squat and pound for pound. So he's been working hard and he's finally found a nutrition plan that is working for him. I expect to see him come into fall camp looking like a beast.

Apparently he's pretty strong for his size, got some superlatives and awards through the winter workout sessions.

3 DT on a 4man front isn't enough speed on the outside to rush the passer.....teams would see this and take advantage of it.

Taylor was bigger and stronger than English......I thought Taylor's senior year wasn't as good as his junior year. English doesn't have a wide or thick frame which makes it difficult for him to gain a lot of weight.

Well when you consider that the left side DE is more of a run stopper and add that to the fact that we got minimal pass rush from the left side last year, you wouldn't be giving up much pass rush.

Plus if you look at a lot of 3-4 set ups, they line up like that quite a bit anyway. I know Bama did it a lot with Hubbard on the line of scrimmage on that right side while the 3 down linemen were shifted so that the LE was outside the guard or over the tackle. Yes you give up a rusher on the right side but if you're not getting much pressure on that side anyway, you're not losing much.

It is really something I just threw out there as a crazy idea to help deepen out D-line since we do have so many DT's that are looking to get on the field.

Alabama has superior athletes and because of that has more options. It wasn't by design that Sutton couldn't get to the QB last year. He was singled most of the time (Clowney had 2-3 on him most of the year) but never seemed to be able to put pressure on the QB......he just couldn't beat the OT. I just don't see whammy using 3DT except in short yardage. If our 3-4 can prove they can stop the run with 4 LB, then I think we'll use that more than originally planned. I think our game plan for our defense will spend on what kind of offense we're playing that particular week......4-2 or 3-4. I guess it all depends on how well our players adjust to and handle the 3-4 scheme.

To be fair to Sutton, if I remember correctly he had foot injury issues all year long, which likely caused a big chunk of his dropoff in productivity.

You're right! People on this site and everywhere get tooo caught up in "weight". Weight means a lot of things. If you just see a kids weight you don't know what type of weight that is. Body fat percentage and other measurables are much more important.

Strength and quickness and technique and even arm length are more important. English is a strong kid and as long as his technique is solid he will do fine and improve with experience.

CB is anyone's guess right now. If Brison W stays at S it could look like this:
CB McWilliams, Lammons
CB Harris or Jamari, Green
