Cornerback is a position where you can be very good, young, doesn't take too much physical development, and while it has some skills to develop, you can look around the conference and country and see that the places you want more experience is safety and linebacker, and get by without it at DL and CB.

I think the fact that we return Safeties with a lot of experience makes us different than UGA's situation last year.

I just don't see the reason to panic about defense right. English is the guy we are counting on to be our pass rushing specialist, if he steps up this year, great, if not, well hopefully someone else will. If we don't have a great pass rushing DL we'll find other was to get some pressure on the QB. Golightly and Allen-Williams are really good in the backfield. Hollomon, Moore, and Lewis have been good on blitzes as well last year.

My problem is that we are counting on a guy that has been unreliable and what bothers me is the "hopefully someone else will" statement. With the way our program has been winning and recruiting, we should have never been in this spot to begin with.

You also have to wonder if our Corners are going to be good enough to bring all of those blitzes. If they bust assignments, which is common with young players, then we are in real big trouble. The offense is only going to be able to carry us so far.

I do think Brison Williams will have to play a bunch of Corner and I'm confident that he can be serviceable but again, he hasn't played a ton of Corner recently so like you hoping for English to be that pass rush guy, I'm hoping that Brison locks down the Corner spot opposite of Rico. IMO, this gets TJ Gurley back on the field which is a must now that he is moving around like he was pre-ACL. That guy might be our best Safety.

I think the D line will be silently strong. Meaning no big super stars, but solid play across the board. A lot of the guys returning have been on the field so that will help. Their maybe a drop off in sacks, but overall I think the D Line will be fine.

Do any of the tackles have the athleticism to play end? Maybe you wouldn't get an elite pass rush, but could they seal the edge and hold the point of attack?

Lamin or Green maybe? Maybe Stallworth could play as a freshman at dt?

This is what makes college football exciting. Should be a new look Gamecock defense for sure this year... the offense will look a good deal different under DT as well. I can't wait to see some unknowns make a name for themselves. Yes, blitzing does it have its risks, but it's also fun to watch. After all, that's why we're fans right? We like to watch. Errbody relax. It's just a game.

I am skeptical that a true freshman (even a talented true freshman) will be physical enough to play corner in the SEC. We play a lot of press man and some of the SEC receivers are really good. If you get overwhelmed by a big, physical receiver ... or out-quicked by someone like Bruce ... there are consequences.

The problem was less risky with Clowney forcing opposing offenses to play more of a quick passing (three step) drop attack.

If you have to be inexperienced in one area, CB is the best position. The most has to go right for the other team to capitalize on you. The snap has to go well, the Oline has to protect well, the QB has to read the defense well, he has to throw it well, and you then have to catch it.

Yes, you get burned now and then early on, but if you are going to be weak in one area that is the most preferable.

Default Re: D-line Progress

Last year our d-line was one of the best in the SEC but our LB's were young and inexperienced. This cost us the Georgia game since once the RB broke through the line they had open space in the middle not to mention pass coverage. This group got better with every game finishing strong against the best running team in the country in Wisconsin.

Now we are revamping the d-line but this time we have guys with experience and one returning starter. English has shown flashes of being a really good player and IMO played well when Clowney sat out. Gerald Dixon made quite a few plays from the other side in a relief role and should lock down that side without any drop off in productivity from last year. If Dukes beat out Dixon Jr than he must have really impressed the coaches this Spring. Not to mention that Abu Lamin really showed out this Spring and will be hard to keep off the field.

Depth will be an issue which is why I believe that Ward will have several 3-4 packages that he will use in certain passing situations. Yes, with the loss of Clowney we won't have the kind of pass rush that we have seen but we should see more disguised blitz packages to compensate.

I don't know what is going to happen, but I am not much more worried than usual before the season. Concerning the secondary, McWilliams looked pretty good to me in the spring game. I like what I saw out of Elder last year. Smith has been in the system for a year now and Marcus and Gurley are capable of playing CB. Are there question marks out on Defense? Sure, but you can say that most years and about most teams. I believe in the talent we have on defense. The incoming secondary is class is one of the best we have ever had. It may take a while for some guys to get some experience and gel, but I think our offense is so loaded we can count on our scoring even good teams like A&M and UGA early in the year if we have trouble stopping them.

Also, I think all the competition we had a linebacker really paid off for us at the end of the year. I expect kind of the same thing to happen in the DL and Secondary this year. It may be a little rough at first, but we just have to get through those early games. New guys always seem to step up when it is there turn do so here. I think that is the culture we have established now. We have a lot of guys that I think want to be leaders.
