Going strictly by the numbers of avid young fans....Baseball is trending down and soccer is growing with new MLS teams coming to Orlando AND Atlanta.

MLS is still on the rise and will continue to grow as we accrue more stars from across the pond.

By comparison, MLBs ratings are the lowest ever they've ever been.

Nothing against soccer but I believe this has more to do with the morons who have been running MLB into the ground and a long series of bad decisions in the Bud Selig era.

I'm not a huge soccer fan but the World Cup is fun stuff, play on...

Check out the ratings of the MLS cup vs the World Series.

Still quite a large gap.

If soccer Is going to catch it will be Europe before the MLS

Either way, Soccer is growing rapidly than most people expected...myself included. Either way, it's another sport than is gaining ground and that is a WIN for the "dead" sports period.

I kind of see soccer like the metric system. I have heard that it was coming for most of my life but have yet to see either make much of a splash here.

I disagree with this.
A major tv network has the rights to a European league (EPL) and shows their games every weekend.

That's quite a splash in my opinion.

(Tell me 10 years ago you would see an EPL game on NBC)

Soccer's growth in the U.S. isn't speculation. The TV money, the ratings growth and the merchandising are all experiencing sharp increases, especially in the last five years. Compare these to golf, NASCAR and baseball, and it's easy to see the reason for bullishness on the future of soccer in the U.S. market. Especially when given the opinion polls of young Americans.

Soccer is the #1 youth participation sport in the USA.

You have two generations of kids that are under 25 years old that grew up playing regularly. In a lot of cases, the only exposure children, especially girls, have to team sports is through soccer.

1 million new Latinos come to this country each year. Guess what their favorite sport is?

The EPL gets massive coverage. The MLS is growing, but will always be minor league until the product improves.

In short, while still a niche sport with the media, soccer is huge with younger Americans, and it is a VERY affordable option when you compare prices to other sports.

The two biggest reasons (Bolded and underscored above) why the sport is growing and will continue to grow; especially if our economy continues to languish. Not sure if those are positive reasons though.

I'm not disputing that soccer has a lot of younger people playing. I'm disputing the same stories every 4 years pointing out these numbers and trying to extrapolate that to some sort of tipping point for soccer here in America.

1 million latinos out of 300+ million people really doesn't do anything.

Also comparing participation rates isn't really applicable for a few reason. 1) baseball and football are only based on boys playing, girls either don't play football or often are playing softball. 2) Soccer is one of the easiest sports to put your kid into and play, when they are like 4. 3) Like you said, it is cheap so it is easy to afford for people.

The media has been trying for years to force soccer on America and it still hasn't taken hold. I always hear how it is taking hold with younger generations, but that really isn't true. It is just a fad that people will go through and support every 3-4 years, but in the off years, they don't care. It isn't that there aren't a lot of soccer fans, but it will never grow to the level that it is in Europe, within America.

It may be that. There are some who truly love soccer just for what it is. However, there is a segment of US fans who think soccer is a more sophisticated sport than other American sports, and if you don't embrace soccer, you are a low intellect individual. It is the same fans who say your ignorant, if you don't agree with their views on soccer greatness.

I find the typical soccer fan to be someone that just doesn't understand sports in general. I'm not going to argue with their critique Barcelona.
