It's crazy to think that his doctors didn't think that the chew caused his cancer. He did but they ddidn't. As an example to his classiness: I went to a braves game and he signed autographs for an hour before and at least an hour afterwards. Was an early afternoon game during the summer

I was going through some cards today to sell online and came across two of his rookie cards. Couldn't bring myself to sell them even though they would bring more now. Tony was one of the greats, and was using a very small bat compared to other big league players. He was also good enough at basketball to get drafted.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard about doctors that know it all well let me tell you I would have, well many more than I got. Cancer really blows and I hate to hear that Mr. Gwynn lost his battle.

RIP Mr Gwynn... A great ball player and a better person!

FWIW, Tony was drafted as a pro basketball player also. Led SDSU in assist for two seasons. That makes total sense!

Grew up watching him be Mr. Consistent (to say the least). Somehow, he is still underrated it seems - baffling. Maybe its because he just showed up and played ball the right way. RIP, Mr Gwynn.

Read some fascinating things about Gwynn today that shows what a remarkable hitter he was.

-In the longest slump of his career in 1998, he went 0 for 19. Previously, his longest slump was 0 for 14. he did that 3 times.

-Gwynn faced Maddux 107 times. He never struck out.

-Gwynn struck out 3 times in a game one time - against Bob Welch (who died last week).

-Gwynn's career high in strikeouts for a season was 40. In his 20 year career, he struck out a total of 434 times. Gwynn had 203 intentional walks - nearly a 1:2 ratio of INTENTIONAL walks to Ks.

-In 1998, Gwynn hit .372 and had a career high 17 homers and 199 RBIs. He was 37 years old.

-Gwynn won 5 Gold Gloves and stole 319 bases.

-Gwynn hit for .300 in 19 of his 20 seasons. The only year he didn't? His rookie year when he hit .289.

-When Gwynn went into his 0 for 19 slump, he could have gone 0 for 1,109 - and still had a lifetime average of .300.

-SInce stats were tracked in 1988, Gwynn hit .302 with 2 strikes. The second highest average with 2 strikes since that time was Wade Boggs - who hit .262.
