I wonder how late Saban stayed up the night before we beat their tails in 2010

Maybe the same time as Spurrier when they beat us in 2009. Don't know.

2009 was a night game, so he probably burned the midnight oil a few extra hours. I guess that was the difference.

I love how our fans and others drool over this guy, yes you are right Spurrier did lose those games but how many 5 star players were on the roster compared to Saban's bama teams? What Spurrier meant and what most of you are not understanding is that with the talent Saban has at Bama if his coaching skills were any good he should have won a lot more. And yes Saban's teams shouldn't have lost to OK or Utah. Non conference bowl games are a whole lot different then conference games in the regular season. You have a month to prepare, a team thats healthy, and a non SEC opponent. While during the season you are fighting injuries, SEC opponents, and limited preparation.

Yes, people tend to "drool" over a coach that's won 4 National Championships at two different schools. Makes one hell of a lot of sense to me. Didn't we have lots of time to prepare for Missouri (bowl), UCONN, FSU, Iowa? That argument is silly anyway, both teams have the same amount of preparation time.

This thread is like some sort of bizarro world. Complain that another coach gets the best players then admit that he works harder at getting those players. Absolutely crazy.

SOS is the best coach in this school's history & that's not remotely debatable imo. We are blessed to have him & Tanner's legacy as an AD might very well be defined on how his post Spurrier hire pans out. His legacy as a Baseball Coach is without question or debate.

Saban came in after DiNardo at LSU & he was plain bad.

Nobody would ever debate that LSU & Bama have a richer tradition than USC, hell, so does clemson & Army.

But the landscape is littered with coaches who went to traditional powers & fell flat on their face. I'll say it again, being Head Football Coach at Alabama guarantees you nothing, history doesn't lie.

The most comical part of all this is coach X wins because he gets the best players. Really? A huge part of a Head Coach's job is to recruit & sign the best players. It's also to hire Assistant Coaches who can both coach & Recruit.

I'm not following the argument here at all.
Saban is a great coach at a great school. But, what did he do at MSU again? A program with even more success than USC. Saban came into great programs and produced. He came to MSU and was ok. I personally think the guys who do more with less are the best coaches. Look at Dantonio. He has had way more success at MSU than Saban did. Dantonio and Spurrier are easily the best coaches in the country IMO.

You can disagree and that is fine. And no one is saying that Saban hasn't produced. But how did he produce at a mediocre program?

What has Spurrier done with a traditionally bottom feeder SEC school? What did he do with a mediocre Florida program? What did he do with Duke?

They are both exceptional coaches, you are splitting hairs.

I'll answer that. When Saban went to MSU they were on sanctions because of their prior head coach. They had not had a winning season for any of the 5 years prior to him arriving. He never had a losing season while he was there but mostly just above .500. Then went 9-2 his last season.

More directly, he was deemed to have done a good enough job to be offered the Head Coach position at LSU. So the people who had a real vested interest in hiring the best available candidate & writing the check apparently thought he had done a fine job.

Now answer this. How did Lou Holtz produce at USC? Is Lou Holtz a great coach?

Saban's first year at Alabama was the 2007 season. USC and Bama tied for the final available bowl that season with equal 6-6 records, but the bowl committee for the Independence Bowl - the final bowl - chose Bama over USC due to Bama being closer and having a larger potential fanbase that would travel better, supposedly.

SEC Football Champs

2006: Florida (beat Arkansas)
2005: Georgia (beat LSU)
2004: Auburn (beat UT)
2003: LSU (beat UGA)

2000: Florida (beat Auburn)
1999: Alabama (beat UF)
1998: Tennessee (beat Miss State)
1997: Tennessee (beat Auburn)

East.....6
West....4

With this past season's win over Missouri, Auburn has evened the total titles since the conference championship game first played in 1992 to 11-11 for each division. When Saban took over at Bama in 2007, the East easily dominated the SECCG titles at 10-5. Beginning in 2007 and since it has been all West at 6-1, including the last 5 consecutive championships. Auburn, LSU, and Bama have each won 2 in that latest run...

In Spurriers first ten years at Florida the East won eight of ten.

Spurrier asked "How many SECs has (Saban) won there in eight years? He's won two. He's won three nationals, but he's only won two SECs in eight years. Now, if you had the No. 1 recruiting class every year and so forth, I don't know if he has maxed out potentially as well as he could."

Saban is entering his eighth season this fall.

Maybe if Spurrier put in a ilttle more time he wouldn't have "that" game every year where we get obviously out coached and out played by an inferior coach and team. On the other hand Saban is a great coach, and I don't think he would have any part of it, but schools in Alabama have been caught cheating as much as anyone in the country. In fact, they may have gotten so good at it that they don't get caught anymore.

Yep, that what I get for relying to much on memory. Was thinking his first year was 08. Doesn't change much of anything because my only point was that Saban has been beating the teams in the best division of the best conference since he's been there. i.e Our record the past 3 yrs is 14-3 against eastern opponents & 4-3 against western opponents. (I think)

As to 6-4 vs 5-5...... OK that's still pretty much equal for 10 yrs but I stand corrected. I was off by 1 game ...... shoot me.

Bill Curry was winning 9 games a year at Bama. How much did Nick really improve them? He did not put Bama or LSU on the map.
Wonder if Mich State would trade Mark "D" for him?
