Default How Michigan's Greed Alienated Fans

This is a cautionary tale for all schools including USC. This UM AD has a lot in common with Buster. Hopefully with Ray at the helm we can avoid this outcome.

This spring, the Michigan athletic department admitted what many had long suspected: Student football ticket sales are down, way down, from about 21,000 in 2012 to a projected 13,000-14,000 this season.
The department has blamed cell phones, high-definition TV and student apathy sweeping the nation. All real problems, to be sure, but they don't explain how Michigan alienated 40 percent of its students in just two years -- and their parents, too.

How did Michigan do it? By forgetting why we love college football.

Except that things were great under Hyman because we had a good team so...... Yeah, not a good comparison. The Hyman years are the Golden Years of Gamecock football and Ray is just following the model of what he did. Texas A&M fans aren't complaining either. What a bunch of haters. Michigan just simply has not been as good as they were in years past.

It also doesn't help that they have had above average teams only, and that Michigan and that area of the country has declining economies and people moving south in droves. But let's just blame tvs!

yeah, i can see complaints right at the beginning about the prices under hyman but he knew exactly what he was doing and our university has been reaping those rewards.

anyone who complains about hyman is just ignorant. i said it. i personally like winning big and will pay a bit. we still are way behind the other programs when it comes to costs.

I don't get the hate for Hyman either. Plus we've sold 51,000 of 55,000 season tickets as of this morning so I think we're doing fine.

We raised our ticket prices to get near the level of UGA / Tenn / UF. We are still not as expensive as them and want to compete with them. Student tickets are free if they pay the "Student Activity Fee" which also allow them to use the Strom Fitness center among other things. Not sure if this article is a good comparison to USC as our ticket prices are still affordable by SEC standards. Student attendence is down across the country no more so here than at other places, for example UF.

This is the 2014 cost WITHOUT any seat donations, which can be hundreds of $$$ Link-
Texas A&M - $475
Auburn - $450
LSU - $425 / $360
Alabama - $405
Missouri - $379 / $288
Arkansas - $375
Tennessee - $370
South Carolina - $365
Ole Miss - $325 / $220
Vanderbilt - $315 / $160
MSU - $310 / $210
Florida - $280
Georgia - $280
Kentucky - $277 / $242

*Note - UGA/UF is played at neutral site, not included in either's season tickets price.

There is this as well -http://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/062514aaa.html

Price raises aren't all Michigan did, so this isn't relevant to Hyman, our athletic department wasn't even in the Black, we needed money to get better facilities, and that's been done, and the spirit of SC hasn't suffered, I think it's been enhanced.

or in 2011 they were 11-2 then went 8-5 then 7-6? or that one of the biggest cities in the state is dwindling and declared bankruptcy with several others struggling?

Having students pay for tickets is a little weak, but don't fool yourself that USC doesn't...it's just included in tuition etc. and not outright.

This is clearly a biased article written to sound like a report instead of an opinion piece.

No, it's just someone trying to reach for some justification to still b*tch about
Hymen and what he did while he was here. He pissed off some old-timers with his new policies and some of them won't get over it.

I feel like part of the problem is that Michigan fans have high expectations. They have a tradition of winning and will accept nothing less than the best. Their best season in the past 10 years or so was 2011 when they won the Sugar Bowl. They went on to an 8 win season (highlighted by a outback bowl appearance ) then a 7 win season and a loss in some crappy bowl. A lot of it is UM fans being pissed off with having a mediocre team. Therefore, they have stopped going to games. Then, just like all teams, it's getting tough competing with HDTV.

This. Big Blue used to compete for a title year in and year out.

Attendance = team performance + fan experience

Increasing fan experience by adding alcohol service in quarters 1-3 would boost attendance big time. Proof? Look at multiple off campus NCAA mens basketball venues that sell beer vs. on campus.
