I DON'T FEEL TARDY
Unusual Encounter with a Garter Snake
Was coming back to the office after lunch, and the short road leading to
my company's facility has produced some snake sightings from a distance
before, but they usually crawl off into the grass before I can get close enough
to see what kind they are.
Today however, I got within a couple hundred yards of our parking lot
and I saw a "line" on the side of the road near the curb that looked like a
snake, but it wasn't moving. I stopped my truck, got out and walked back
to where it was and saw that it was a young Garter snake. BEAUTIFULLY
Marked, and was dark black with light yellow lines. The black was almost
totally dark and I couldn't see the scale markings. I stood over it, and it
didn't move or exhibit any sign of life, and I started thinking it had been
run over, and was dead for a while even though there were no signs of
blood or "gore" around it. I pushed at it with my finger and it was stiff as
a brick and the entire body moved like a stick. As if Rigor Mortis had set in
for quite a while. I started to walk back to the truck and I saw the tongue flicker
and I got a really confused approach to it at that point. I thought it had been
run over maybe, and was very near death, I pushed at it one more time
to check it, and again, the entire body stayed rigid and moved all at the same
time and it was extremely stiff.
NOW... I used to catch Garters by the dozens each week when I was a kid
and I've never seen a live or active snake act this way, so I assumed it was
near death, so I started to carefully lift it with my thumb and middle finger
near the center of it's body to throw it off to the side....... as soon as I touched
the snake with my thumb and finger, this thing HAULED ASS toward the
grass like a bottle rocket and was out of sight in less than three seconds.
DAMN !! .... This creature acted like it couldn't / wouldn't move at all for
almost 5 minutes, But as soon as it realized it was about to be picked up,
it shot off like the creature that burst out of Kane's Chest in the movie
Alien, and was GONE in less than three seconds.
