It's not just about athletic tangibles. Comes down to skill, talent for the game, and (as many have pointed out) exposure to top-flight competition. There's some serious filtering that takes place in European/South-American futbol.
As an insider, you guys should know how slow we are in the soccer world.

Sebastian Velasquez, a locak kid from Greenville was dominating youth club soccer to the point where Barcelona offered him a try out, the kid was a stud in the states but couldnt make it into the Barcelona academy.

What's next? He came back home thinking he had a full ride at Clemson but guess what? The stupid ncaa didnt let him bc he had "pro" experience already, those rules are so stupid.

A year ago, Duch Fork HS had a kI'd that used to play at Madrid academy, kids a stud, guess what? The high school "league" didnt let the kid play high school ball, sc soccer clubs didn't let the kid play either, we have bunch of stupid rules.

I believe we have a lot more talent than the 23 players in Brazil right now, soccer needs more than just convincing 6 6" dudes to play soccer.

Our second and third divisions need to be stronger...

Know wonder soccer people don't think tall people can play, this German giant is one of the most unathletic people I have ever seen play a sport. USA has tall people who don't lumber around. If this fool can play for one of the best teams in the world than there is no doubt the US can produce a team full of taller and faster players than the world currently has.

You're making yourself sound more and more ignorant with each post. He is notoriously slow but he keeps himself in very good positions to defend...Lowe needs to make a change here soon or yes, this strategy WILL cost the germans

ignored to save sanity.

Go out to a public basketball park in NY and you will find 5 guys his height and better athletically. Seems like you are the ignorant person, if you are willing to say that German defender is anywhere close to an elite athlete.

mertesacker is going to cost the Germans the game if something doesn't change. The keeper having to come out 25 - 30 yards eventually will get chipped over.

I am one of the people saying tall people are at a disadvantage because I really do think that the low center of gravity helps in soccer. there is a a point where the height does become a disadvantage for the mids and fowards. However I am totally on board with Lalli in regards that if our premier players started playing young and stayed with it the USA would dominate. I just think it would be players topping out at 6'6. It is shear numbers and infrastructure. We are what the 3rd most populated country behind China and India. Neither one of those countries has the infrastructure to compete even though they have the population. Russia could probably make the same argument that if their best athletes didn't play hockey and played soccer that they would be the best in the world.

I agree that at a certain point, height can begin to hinders athleticism. I think it's reasonable to say, you can fill out a team ranging from 6'2 to 6'6. It just has to be guys who played all their lives not just a couple years.

The proper set of athletes to compare to pro soccer players are professional cyclists.

To paraphrase Tyler Hamilton on his experience at the 2004 Olympics, "It's amazing at the number of ways one can prefect the human body."

In other words, those that are perfectly built for a particular sport will rise to the top of that sport....

It's not like USA only has tall people to offer. For ever 6'6" guy, we have a 5'9" Ace Sanders or Bruce Ellington who have the speed, agility, and low center of gravity some of y'all are talking about.

Do our best athletes play soccer?
No...they don't.

I'm convinced if our best athletes grew up playing soccer, we would already have a world cup, maybe even two.

The sad thing is, it isn't like football...we can't just plug an amazing athlete out there and have him succeed. The individual skills they can learn pretty quickly, but the team concept takes years to learn and perfect.

Just imagine, a guy of Lebron James talent and size growing up playing soccer as a midfielder or defensemen.

Again, athletically, our best could blow a lot of teams off the field...but as the World Cup shows, it isn't always athletes that win...it is guys that know the science of the game, run sets and play as a team.

Football players for the most part and boxers, soccer requires a level of quickness and explosiveness, I'm convinced that players such as Vick, McFadden, Cam, Lattimore, Clowney or boxers such as Mayweather or Ali, they will with no doubt dominate, that Sherman dude,Tyson and his power.

Not hating on Lebron but I don't think he is quick enought to dominate in soccer.

I agree with you, that German dude is very slow, Peter Crouch isn't quick enought as well.

Think Paul Gasol, you think he didn't dream of playing for Madrid? So did Ginobili but the reality, they were not quick enought for soccer.

Lebron is a better athlete than Lattimore.

(In terms of tangible athletic ability, quickness, speed, jumping ability, strength etc etc.

Lebron is explosive, idk about quickness.

If Lebron were to mark Michael Vick on a soccer field, it wouldn't even be funny.

He's quicker than Lattimore. And definitely Michael Vick (now Vick when he was 23 years old is a different story)

He's very quick, he can cover any player on the court, even Point Guards (see a couple years ago when he was covering Derek Rose before his injury was one of the if not quickest)

I may be wrong about Lebron not being that quick but covering somebody like Michael Vick on his prime is almost impossible, just like trying to hit Mayweather.

You should watch videos of Fat Ronaldo (the older one) or Jorge Gonzalez, no defender on the planet could keep up with their quickness.

Looking at the Mayweather-Hernandez fight, Mayweather got hurt in the firts few rounds, Hernandez could have made history buy young Mayweather was too fast, Hernandez couldn't touch him...

Lebron is more power than anything else, in football he wouldn't catch up with Vick, in boxing he would have gotten destroyed by Ali... I think.

After watching more soccer over the past week than the entirety of my life, here is one player I think would be a no-brainer...

Deion Sanders: No doubt in my mind. This guy impacted a contact sport without making contact. Relying solely on his unbelievable speed and quickness, Deion was untouchable. Obviously we will never know what type of skill he could have ever developed, but he didn't necessarily have great ball skills for the NFL either... yet he's a Hall of Famer.

I might be wrong, but given LeBron's size and explosiveness, wouldn't goalkeeper be his more natural soccer position? He is more than likely too big to play the field unless he were maybe a center back. As a coach I would love to have his athletic ability in the penalty box. Running up and down the field would most likely be a physiological issue, cramping and muscle tears, body is too big.

Yes. I've spoken with more than one person trying to get in on the action (including myself). Mark it down, Soccer stock is going through the roof.
