I'm drunk but I won't get over it, we are better than this zhit, we just need a big boy as a coach.

We need players who are technically sound and more gifted. We have good players. We don't have world class players. We don't have a midfield player who can change the game by possessing, controlling the midfield, and passing. We don't have a world class striker. We are a couple of players away from going further in the World Cup. We are a few players away from winning the World Cup.

There's a reason you saw the German American players play such a huge role in this tournament. They are better trained and coached with more technical skill than American soccer players. We need more of those here in the US.

Our issue isn't with the coach. Klinsmann did the best he could with what he had. I think he is in a great position to take us further. He just needs better players to do that.

Fabian Johnson is a star in the making.

I hope he stays in Germany because I don't think there is enough training/competition in the US to help him improve his skills.

It may be closing...but the gap between the US and the elite teams is still HUGE. One thing the US team couldn't afford to do was miss scoring opportunities and they missed several big ones. Sure the US could have won, but they could have lost 8-1 also, imo. I don't know very much about soccer, but it looks like defense and guys who can pass on offense are the biggest glaring holes.

Agreed. And until the US is able to close the gap on being able to teach younger players, other countries will continue to be better than us.

Here's a great example of how things changed in Belgium. It's a long read but a good one on the culture, coaching, and training that went into developing this team.

Defense is one of our biggest strengths. We have some solid young players. The defense looked weak because of glaring holes in the midfield and attack. We had so many shots taken against us that we were bound to look weak. That's not true at all. If you look at how many shots we had against us and how many clearances we had in this World Cup, it's amazing how well our defense performed. Do we still need to get better? Absolutely. However, it's not our glaring weakness.

We need a more dominating midfield with guys who can possess the ball, control the game, and create scoring opportunities. We also need world class strikers. To me, these are our biggest weaknesses. Teams like Germany and Belgium had these as well as depth we can only dream about. Guys on their bench would start for most teams in the World Cup.

Looking at the future, 3 good attacking mids should be there.

-------Guzan------

Yendling---Gonzalez--Brooks---Fabian

Corona---Silva----Gil

Johansson---Jozy---Green

We will finally be able to attack vs good teams

Good teams made our defense look hilarious. I do agree that midfield help is needed...but those guys were toying with our defense all day. Without Howard in goal that game would have been over real quick. At least that's how it looked to me

Agreed. Howard saved us but our defense wasn't that big of an issue. Teams have so many shots against us because we aren't able to control the ball (Look at Spain. During their glory years, they didn't give up many goals because they always possessed the ball - 70 to 80% of possession during matches so the other team hardly touched it).

I will use a college football analogy. We killed Clemson the last few years because we wore them down on offense -we held onto the ball, ground it out, punished them, dominated time of possession and eventually scored. In that case, you blame the defense. In the case of soccer, we were like "we don't want the ball. You keep it and just see if you can score on us." Most of the time they couldn't. After being battered relentlessly, we finally gave up a couple of goals. We sat back and played defense because we didn't have the players to possess the ball and attack.

Against Ghana, Germany, and Belgium, we sat back and defended nearly the entire game. The attack on us was relentless. Yet we gave up a total of 4 goals in those matches. That is OUTSTANDING - especially considering how many shots and possession teams had against us. Do we need to get better on defense? Yes but it's not our most glaring weakness.

In the game against Ghana, we had 45 clearances - the most in a World Cup match since 1966 (a clearance is when the defense kicks the ball out of danger by relieving the pressure from the attacking team). Against Belgium, we had 61 clearances. Howard did a great job but the defense did well also considering how often they were under pressure. Being under constant pressure isn't the fault of the defense.

As mediocre/poorly as Bradley played this Cup, does anyone think that it could've been a result from a lack of explosion ahead of him (mainly the loss of Altidore?). Its hard to keep up sometimes but Julian Green's run was the first time I had seen one of our strikers make a clean break and Bradley made an awesome play. Maybe he was handcuffed in a way?

We also do a poor job spacing, IMO. We always seem to have 3 shirts in one area when we possess the ball. Spacing and our overall play looked a hell of a lot better when we went balls to wall at the end. Maybe that's part of the midfield problem we have?

Bradley is fit enough to handle the task. He made a 60 yd recovery run late in the game and made a defensive play. That just doesn't happen all the time

Corona can dribble, Gil is pacey, Silva is a stud, we should be more attacking from now on.

Spacing during the match yesterday was at times awful. Even when there was spacing, our guys didn't go a good job pushing the ball and trying to exploit those areas. There were many times yesterday when I was yelling at the TV telling them to push the ball up the field, spread out, and make runs. It didn't work. We did do a better job later but this team is scared to death to push forward when they are tied or have a lead because they fear getting exposed (more so in the midfield than in the back).

Most soccer players are phenomenal athletes. There's no such thing as a fat soccer player. That may not translate to other sports but some of their legs are about as big as many people's bodies.
